Summary

A clone has been the victim of a savage killing. The investigation may uncover a threat to humanity's very existence. Great North Road is a standalone adventure from science fiction star Peter F. Hamilton, the author of The Night's Dawn trilogy.

For fans of Philip K. Dick and Kim Stanley Robinson.

In Newcastle, AD 2142, Detective Sidney Hurst attends a brutal murder scene. The victim is one of the wealthy North family’s clones, but the most disturbing aspect is how he died. Twenty years ago, a North clone billionaire and his household were slaughtered in the exact same manner, on the tropical planet of St Libra. The only member of the household left alive, Angela Tramelo, received the blame. Was Angela wrongly convicted back then? She’d never wavered under interrogation – claiming she alone survived an alien attack.

With St Libran bio-fuel now powering Earth's economy, investigating this alien threat becomes top priority. A vast expedition is mounted via the planet’s Newcastle gateway – including Angela Tramelo, grudgingly released from prison. But the expedition is cut off, deep within St Libra's rainforests. Then the bloodshed begins . . .

It's long and it's good!

What did you like most about Great North Road?

This was the first sci-fi book I'd read/listened to for a good few years, mostly I do the crime and fantasy stuff, but this one caught my eye because it was a mix of crime and sci-fi.

Some of the sci-fi I read in my youth got lost in the tech descriptions but this one just rolls along and you absorb the finer details so that the technology and terms do not stop you in your tracks. The crime itself is simple enough to follow and the cloning angle keeps you guessing.

The book is over 36 hours long so it's a biggie, but it never flags.

As a result of listening to this story I have read Pandora's Star and have nearly finished Judas Unchained and will read more from this author.

Any additional comments?

If you are someone like me who hasn't read any sci-fi for a while but want a stonking good story with some twists along the way, this is a great one to listen to. Very good performance by the reader (I listened at 1.25 speed) - I hope you enjoy it too!

Technology Future

Would you listen to Great North Road - Part One again? Why?

Maybe, I loved this book. I'm fairly new to Audible and I read some reviews which suggested this book was hard to get into at the beginning but I didn't find that to be the case. I would consider listening to it again one day.

What did you like best about this story?

The technology, the futuristic thoughts and already seeing some of the technology becoming a reality. You are always thinking about the characters and their relationships.

What about Toby Longworth’s performance did you like?

Everything, great accents, gender alternatives - good narrative.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Alien, Friend or Foe?

Any additional comments?

If you love tech or sci-fy read/listen to this book!

Vast, sprawling opera...

Entertaining, surprising, many twists. Very long... the middle got a bit plodding, but well worth listening to the end. The idea of "The Norths" is absolute genius.

long, roaming, and very enjoyable to the end

What made the experience of listening to Great North Road the most enjoyable?

enough parallel threads to provide variety whilst still manageable to follow

What other book might you compare Great North Road to, and why?

maybe some of Asimov's better space opera

What does Toby Longworth bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

the ability to 'read' whilst dog-walking :)

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no chance, it's way too long. Always happy to get back to it.

Any additional comments?

My first by Hamilton, I've just bought my second...

Hamilton continues to deliver

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have been a fan of Hamilton since reading the Nights Dawn books. Hamilton is a master of Space Opera and he can spin a tale that keeps me fascinated the entire time. What probably stands out the most is his ability to create worlds and universes complete with all stages of the human condition as well as aliens of all shapes and sizes. Technology is a large part of this type of book and this is an area where Hamilton really sets the standard. I like the way he makes use of technology and its impact on human society.

Great North Road starts out like a whodunnit story, which is typically not my favorite genre. That is also why I have waited a while listening to the book even though I love Hamiltons other works. But when the story got started it turned out to be a very enjoyable and highly recommendable experience.

Top class writing.

I have not read Peter F. Hamilton before but this book appeared on several ‘Best SF books of all time’ lists so I gave it a go. Fully deserving of its place on these lists, not just as an SF novel but also as a whodunit, a thriller and a police procedural.

Brilliant !

Another great read from Hamilton, and the audio narration is also excellent by Toby Longworth. Hard to put this down once I started it...
