Publisher's Summary

A stunning stand-alone thriller from the leading crime writer in South Africa, author of the best-selling Benny Griessel series.

I want to tell you about my father's murder. I want to tell you who killed him and why. This is the story of my life. And the story of your life and your world, too, as you will see.

Nico Storm and his father drive across a desolate South Africa, constantly alert for feral dogs, motorcycle gangs, nuclear contamination. They are among the few survivors of a virus that has killed most of the world's population. Young as he is, Nico realises that his superb marksmanship and cool head mean he is destined to be his father's protector.

But Willem Storm, though not a fighter, is a man with a vision. He is searching for a place that can become a refuge, a beacon of light and hope in a dark and hopeless world, a community that survivors will rebuild from the ruins. And so Amanzi is born.

Fever is the epic, searing story of a group of people determined to carve a city out of chaos.

    "great read"

Post-apocalypse is no means my genre. But Deon Meyer is such a good writer I made an exception. It's not futuristic or fantasy, it's down-to-earth and real. How the remaining people choose to survive after most of our species is killed by a virus: What kind of societies come about, the politics, the security issues, the systems of providing basic needs. Being Meyer though, it has well-developed characters, and is fast-paced with mystery and intrigue, anguish and humour thrown in. The narrators are very good, and to a South African, authentic. Americans, who seem to have had difficulty even with Saul Reichlin, had better listen to a sample first.

    "An enthralling story"

This is a totally enthralling story, wonderfully written and narrated. Deon Mayer brings his characters alive so well.

I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a well-written novel in which you can become absorbed into a fictional world. Do not be put off by the post-apocalyptic topic - it is not overly grim or at all futuristic.

    "An outstanding book"

An emotional roller coaster from South Africa's nr 1 author. Highly recommend.
The narration was high quality, keeping the listener enthralled, I actually found myself driving slower to work to extend my listening experience
I can't wait for the next instalment.

    "Apocalyptic story with a twist"

Deon Meyer is an excellent story teller. There are always so many twists and turns in his novels, and underlying these is an insightful account of the fabric of South Africa's society and landscape. Jennifer Woodburn was an excellent narrator. Not so Peter Noble. It's a pity that he couldn't hold accents and at times seemed to just read of the page. The end is most unexpected!
