Publisher's Summary

My name is Frank Butcher, and evidently when you save the world, it comes back for seconds.

After I stopped a world ending apocalypse, my allies tried to cut open my chest with an axe. Kind of messed up, if you ask me.

Thankfully, I've got a chance to return the favor. And I'm going to take it. Not because they're trying to magically reshape the natural laws that govern our planet. No, I'm doing this because trying to cut out my heart is not okay.

    "Another day, another magic fight"

Note: This is Book 2 of the series and it works best if you’ve already read Book 1, Heart of Gold.

Frank Butcher used to be a package delivery man but events nearly killed him and Dr. Gabrielle Perez placed a magical artifact, a heart of gold, in his chest to keep him going. The mayhem didn’t stop there and Gabrielle’s son Max was stolen by a group of murdering magic users. Now Frank and Gabrielle are trying to get him back and save the world along the way.

The Golem we met in Book 1 gets a bigger role in this book and I’m glad to see his character growing (hardening? setting up? baked?). Abner (who Frank annoys by calling Aby) saves the day once or twice. Also some of the bad guys from Book 1 get more depth in this book. Tabitha, who Frank likes to annoy by calling Tabi, has a bit more going on than I initially expected. In fact, there’s this pretty emotional scene between her and Frank where Frank gets some much needed answers but then things get messy.

There’s still some sparks between Gabrielle (who Frank annoys by calling Gabby) but she’s caught up with figuring out how to get Max back so romance is put on the back burner. Speaking of Max, he’s got some special power that the head of this murdering band of sorcerers wants to put to bad use. We get a glimpse of Max but we still haven’t rightfully met him. He’s basically an object to quest for or fight over right now.

The head of this unscrupulous group of child stealers is named something mellow like Virgil or Cecil or Liam or such. I keep picture him sipping tea and concealing a dagger behind his back. He definitely needs to be taken down!

Frank has the same humor as in Book 1 but here it’s put to better use. I didn’t tire of it as I did in Book 1. I like all the movie references. The heavier scenes definitely balanced out all of Frank’s throw away comments and quips.

The action rolls on through this book, it never being a dull moment. Looking forward to Book 3.

I received a free copy of this book.

The Narration: Joe Hempel was great with this book. He’s so good at playing Frank. I also like his voice for Gabrielle, it being feminine, and carrying the right mix of emotions depending on the scene. His voice for Abner is great as well.

"Thrilling story with some great twists"

This is an entertaining, action packed story that continues on from where book one left off. Frank Butcher is the same humorous, snarky person we fell in love with in the first story but this time he is a bit more prepared for the battles and trials thrown at him. This book has plenty of action, thrills, intrigue and some really surprising twists. The narrator does an excellent job of the audiobook; he shows Butcher's sarcastic humour very well and bring the characters and action in the story to life. Lives are at risk, hearts might be broken, battles are fought and the worlds continued existence becomes seriously in doubt, in this thrilling instalment of the Clan of the Shadows. I can not wait to find out where this story will lead next.

    Which scene was your favorite?

This book was well-written and full of non-stop action with Frank getting used to having an artificial, magic-cancelling heart and being more comfortable with the world of magic.

    "Hilarious Action"

I still love Frank and all his wonderful attitude. I feel sorry for the guy with everything that has happened to him and all the surprises that pop up, but it's highly entertaining for me so I can't help but laugh at a lot of it. Joe sounds awesome reading again and brings so much character to the story that you just can't get from words on a page. This is awesome to listen to, but I wouldn't let someone under the age of 14 or 15 listen to it. If you love DeadPool or anyone with that kind of attitude I would definitely bet you will enjoy this series.

No second book letdown here. I really enjoyed this book. I've listened to Joe's other works and he continues to impress. I received this audiobook for free through Audiobook Boom for my unbiased review.

    Any additional comments?

An entertaining and enjoyable addition to the series. I was really looking forward to this book and was not disappointed.

The story starts out full force, hits the ground running and never slows down. It pulls you immediately, never lets go for a minute and is over before you realize you've been listening for 5 1/2 hours. Even though it's a shorter story it's well written, flows smoothly and is packed full of non-stop action, suspense, humor, betrayal, interesting creatures, intrigue, magic and just plain fun.

This is not a series you can just jump right into to. This story picks up where the first one ended. If you have not read the first book in the series you will be lost for a while. (and missing out) It's an all around entertaining series and is worth your time and credits to start at the beginning.

Momma Butcher didn't raise a quitter. No matter what is thrown at him Frank Butcher is going to find a way.

Be warned. There is a cliffhanger.

Once again Joe Hempel does a great job with the narration. Nice voice. Easy to listen to for hours at a time. Clearly spoken with a nice pace. Really good character voices. Perfect tone and delivery of the snarky sarcastic humor. He was able to bring the story and characters to life through his narration. Very enjoyable

"Picking up where book one left off."

Feet of Clay picks up where Heart of Gold leaves off, and it picks up the same campy humor, sarcastic one-liners, and high stakes action. If you enjoyed Heart of Gold then you will likely enjoy this book as well.

While I enjoyed both books, I do feel that the plot - fighting to rescue the beautiful Doctor's son - is mainly just being recycled, and from the end of this book, it seems book three will also. This makes me a bit reluctant to continue with this series. Do we really need ANOTHER book of them fighting the same fight against overwhelming odds to rescue the boy? Can we get a new carrot to dangle for book 4?

Joe Hempel once again does an amazing job narrating this story. He does an excellent job voice acting and bringing the characters to life and breathing personalities into each one of them. His superb job narrating this book probably kept me more invested in the story than the plot did.

I was pleased to get book 2 to review as well. I enjoyed Heart of Gold and this was a great continuation of the story. Joe Hempel continued to do a great job bringing the characters to life. I will definitely seek out the 3rd book of the trilogy to continue the story.

    "Frank's excellent extra-dimensional adventure"

If you enjoyed Heart of Gold, then you'll be happily reunited with the cast as their magical battles continue. It had been months since I'd listened to the first book in the series, but hearing Joe Hempel bring the characters to life helped quickly ease me back into Frank Butcher's world. As always this series has twists and turns, don't expect things to be as they seem... and don't expect Frank to have an easy time!
