Summary

With news of Horus' treachery spreading across the galaxy, the Great Crusade grinds to a halt as the primarchs and their Legions decide where their loyalty lies - with the Emperor or with the rebel Warmaster.

The Dark Angels, too, face a time of testing, both among the stars and on their home world, Caliban. Luther, once Lion El'Jonson's trusted second-in-command, now languishes as an exile in all but name while his master struggles to thwart the traitors' advance upon the forge world Diamat. But an ancient evil gathers its strength beneath the surface of Caliban, and the First Legion will soon be thrust into a deadly conflict where all that they know will be cast into doubt.

Really not very good.

Firstly: the voices that the narrator chooses for the main characters is infuriating. secondly, the astartes make numerous stupid mistakes and oversights that I simply cannot believe that warriors who have fought in hundreds of wars could ever make. the primary example of this being where they totally miss that a battle has not happened ina place where they thought that it had. beyond this the plot is simply OK.

I personally wish that I hadnt used a credit on this.

jarring changes in character voices.

the 1st legion story arc is shaping up to be one of my favourites
this narrator though.
I just cant get in to the dialogue flows, trans-human super soldiers, of which all of his voices are distinctly deeper and rougher than humans.
except the 2 main protagonists, who sound like prebubescent lads whose voices will never break.
irritating to say the least.
I'm on the verge of just buying any further books in the series, that he narrates, in physical copy, so I can just read and not have to listen to this performance again.

Great follow up to the short story

Good narration och characters that bring the book to life. interesting to hear how the angels fell.

a bit boring

the main problem with this book is the main character. he is completely perfect and there is no flaw whatsoever. story is also not cohesive and there are no overall motivations or agendas for the characters. It's just a series of set pieces to tell the history of the dark angels. Avoid if you can, it does not add anything to the heresy

For the Lion.

Great insight into the world of Caliban after it is trying to integrate into the imperium of man. I would have liked interaction between The Primarch and Luther but it was still a good book.

A Knowing Performance

Though the story itself is predictable and formulaic, it is still (as the books often are) quite fun. What makes this better though is the voice work: perfectly encapsulating the stilted emotional range of these frozen child soldiers, as well as the haughty pomposity of their supposedly chivalric culture. You know the end from the start, but given the engaging narration by Ambrose, the details are worth a listen, if you're already a fan of the franchise, that is!

a new favourite

I saw some bad reviews on this and held off on it for a long time, I wish I hadn't. it contains a rich story, with far more relatable reasons why people could turn traitor on the imperium. lion is a bit lame though

Not Exciting

not as bad as the first dark angels book in the Horus heresy but I still did not enjoy it as much as the other books. maybe I'm not a dark angels fan. I found the story quite boring and the battles were barely anything. I don't find any of the characters that likeable and quite dry.
