Publisher's Summary

Now a celebrated war hero, Captain Kat Falcone is back at the helm of HMS Lightning...and up against near-impossible odds. After an ill-timed outburst almost ends her career, Kat is handed command of a deep-strike mission into enemy space. The objective is to gather intelligence and distract the hostile Theocracy while the Commonwealth prepares its counteroffensive.

The chances for success are slim - and for survival even slimmer.

Armed with a ragtag fleet of outdated starships, a few loyal officers, and a skeleton crew of refugees, Kat knows the Royal Navy expects her to fail. But failure almost certainly means death - or worse, as the Theocracy does not treat prisoners kindly. Pitted against the enemy defenses of her old nemesis Admiral Junayd, there is no room for error. And with a spy hidden aboard her ship, Kat will need more than her wits to survive. Can Kat enter the lion's den, strike a blow for the Commonwealth, and escape with her life?

Much like honour harrington and in a good way.
Entertaining and surprising plot development. But on the big scale expected results in the end.

    "Decent, better than book 1"

This is a space-naval drama that carries an enormous number of parallels with the Kris Longknife series (strong female lead from a wealthy aristocratic family, run away to the navy, promoted beyond her experience and given unrealistic odds but through wit and excellent leadership is enormously successful) , although a totally different story and political situation are at play.

Personally I like science fiction for the science and space operas for the complex politics. This story is more of a naval drama than a science fiction or a political space opera. I wish there was more focus on the science, but I am a high school science teacher so I have my personal biases. None the less, I was drawn in by the story and by the developing characters. The voice acting is great and it's a decent story, but does not compete with the Enders series, Asimov's Foundation or the more whimsical Kris Longknife.

I did find this book to be a step up from the first in the series and hopefully it will improve with further publications. I'll give it a solid three and a half stars and I'll definitely be buying the next one when it comes out.

    "Great sequel, appalling narration"

I really like Chris Nuttall's books, and am really enjoying this sequel, but I've had to give up on listening to it, I'm now reading it on my Kindle because the narration is so awful.

Sad to say, Lauren Ezzo just cannot 'do' male voices. Since most of the characters are male it is a bit of a problem. I gritted my teeth through book 1, but this is just painful. I won't be trying a third time, I'm afraid.

    "Empire's Corps v2.0"

I can't find this book great. It's almost the same as entire Empire's Corp's saga. So if you liked it you should like this (of course this is more navy concentrated story) . If you didn't liked Empire Corp saga... Read Ark Royal instead ;)

    "Fantastic Followup!"

Oh my God! The war is ON! This story is a wonderful take on the horrors of war. My only complaint is when narrator is speaking for the X.O., she far too quiet, and since he's a major character, it becomes a real problem when trying to listen.

    "Gripping action"

This is book two in the Angel in the Whirlwind series about Kat Falcone. Captain Kat Falcone is back in command of HMS Lighting. The mission is a deep strike mission into enemy space to gather intelligence and distract the Theocracy while the Commonwealth prepares a counter offensive. Kat has gained the confidence of King Hadrian, and has been given a brevet rank of Commodore. Her ship HMS Lightening has been newly outfitted but the rest of the ships in her squadron are outdated and understaffed and to top it off there is a spy aboard.

The book is well written and the plot flows smoothly with some exciting twist. The last half of the book has some space battles and Kat adds some captured ships to her fleet. It is obvious that Nuttall is building the base for future books in the series. I am enjoying this series so far. I had less difficulty with the narrator Lauren Ezzo this time; sort of getting use to her style of reading but still do not like the flat dull delivery of some of the characters.

"like the book, very similar to honor harrington."

the narrator's range of voices was extremely limited. most of them were either pouty, whiny or nasally. for a military book, it leaves the command presence pretty lacking.

The reader needs to work on her secondary character voices. Sorry was fun, but not great.

"listen to the sample before buying"

The narrator's natural voice is awesome but character voices (especially males) are really quite terrible. It ends up being quite a distraction.

"Story pretty good but narration disturbing"

Most of the voices used are whiney, weak, breathless dying old men, so depressed they can barely keep their eyes open, or the priest from princess bride. You can tell different characters are speaking, but the voices don't match what the character should likely sound like. It is distracting.

    "Good Continuation of the series"

Good Continuation of the series though this one seemed rushed to me. The time period covered in the situation in this book left me with a bunch of questions I could not much deal with..i won't go into them since I not about to drop spoilers but still I think this could have been extended further ... still I did like it for what content was presented and I look forward to book 3

    "Going behind enemy lines"

Falcon Strike is the 2nd installment of Christopher G Nuttall's Angle in the Whirlwind series. The political controversy in the Confederacy is still evident and Kat manages to run afoul of political enemies. As a result, Kat accepts a secret mission to take a ragtag group of ships behind theocractic lines to disrupt their operations and impede supply lines. Kat has an opportunity to improvise and take the battle to the enemy in a decisive fashion. Along the way, she accumulates valuable intelligence and recovers some POWs, while dealing with an embedded spy.

The sci-fi elements are aligned with the earlier volume. The military scenes are well rendered from both a strategic as well as tactical level. In addition, about half the tale is told from the perspective of a theocractic admiral disgraced in volume 1. New allies are formed and Kat manages to develop her surrounding support staff. Much remains to be wrapped up, especially at the political level her father operates in.

The narration is less than optimal. While a female narrator is key given the leading character, the male characters are rendered with either a blase, cavalier, nasal, or phlegmatic style that detracts from the listening and at times places the mood of the speaker at odds with the story context.

    "Unconvincing narrator Voices"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No, The story was promising, however the narration caused me to struggle to get through it. I will probably not continue the series unless it is re-recorded.

Would you be willing to try another one of Lauren Ezzo’s performances?

    Never.
