Publisher's Summary

In the far future, mankind lives safe and secure behind the Chronos Ring - an automatic defense system that encircles the area of space occupied by human beings. The Ring keeps out all of humanity's enemies - in particular, a vicious race of reptilians known as the Parsnaak.

On the outer fringe of human-occupied space is the planet Muse, an entire world dedicated and established as a colossal museum - a storehouse of antiquities and relics from the ancient histories of both men and aliens. There, Ian Lotus, a man with his own mysterious past, has chosen to live in deliberate obscurity, harboring secrets that could reshape mankind's destiny.

Now, the impossible has happened: the Chronos Ring has been breached - rendered inert - and Lotus finds himself no longer able to hide in the shadows as he becomes the object of a massive interplanetary manhunt. However, his problems go well beyond simply being the most wanted man in the galaxy. There's also the approaching Parsnaak invasion fleet to deal with, as well as an enigmatic, extra-dimensional being of immense power who, for reasons unknown, wants Lotus dead.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely ! Ian Lotus sure has his hands full in this book. After the Chronos ring is breached he cant hide in his life of obscurity anymore and is thrust in to a crazy whirl wind of sci fi gold. This whole crazy adventure starts because of the Parsnaak and the breach of the defense system that protects humanity for sure but I think the main story here is Ian Lotus and his secret past.He cant Hide in the shadows any longer and humanity needs a hero,so what if that hero is the most wanted men in the system haha. There is action, history, secrets and a view of future politics that is very well written and executed. It is full throttle from the start! I loves how we started the book off on the Parsnaak ship.Sometimes a series feels like it had the potential to be epic. This series feels just like that.It certainly puts a lens on humanity. There are insightful nuggets that I hope pleasantly surprise you as they did me.

Have you listened to any of Mikael Naramore’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't but I would again in a heart beat. Mikael Naramore was superb . His enactment, tempo, and changing speech patterns for each individual Mikael is distinct and engaging. I do not believe the print version is any less compared to the audiobook but I will say Mikael Naramore adds a new dimension to the novel that cannot be appraised enough and would suggest to any reader to give the audio version a try.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and I did.I stayed up til 4 am listening is was so enthralling.

    Any additional comments?

A most enjoyable romp to save humanity set some time long into the future.
Surrounded by an engineering marvel, the Chronos Ring, which is an impregnable defensive barrier through which no enemy can pass, humanity has been able to expand and prosper for decades knowing that alien invasion is impossible. But then the impossible happens: four Parsnaak ships are somehow able to pass through the barrier unhindered. Without any other defenses, the whole of mankind is likely to be enslaved and destroyed when the main Parsnaak fleet arrives. There is only one hope: repair the Ring. And only one man who can do it, Chronos himself. But he hasn't been seen for over half a century - or has he? Even if he were to be found, what could be do with so little time remaining?

Amusing, action filled with a fair amount of feasting, the reader follows the adventures of tall, dark and handsome Iain Lotus as he is persued across space, accompanied by the attractive, and persistent, Monica Starsong. The narration is well suited to the text, with Mikael Naramore's brisk but warm reading echoing the nuances of the novel and voicing each protagonist clearly and differently from any other. He really gets into the character of Lotus.

No deep thinking needed for this story. It is simply an amusing romp with fights and thrills and fun. My thanks to the rights holder for gifting me a copy of this enjoyable book, via Audiobook Boom.

"A Strange but interesting sci-fi adventure"

I really want to know about this setting, it's history and some of the characters in it. There is so much that has happened in this setting that are just hinted at. Different alien races, spaceships, wars, spies, politics all for the most part in the background. The book flows well with good pacing and is always interesting even if Lotus feels like he has a bit of plot armour protecting him.

Mikael Naramore is a great narrator and I would highly recommend anything that you see their name on, they provide another excellent performance here with great character voices, emotions and the ability to pull you into the events of the book much more than simple printed words ever could.

From start to finish I very much enjoyed my time listening to this book. All in all Earl E. Hardman has crafted an interesting rich world with an engaging story that was well worth the listen. I look forward to seeing what happens in the next book.

An exciting story with plenty of twists and a new twist on a galactic war.
Can one man be responsible for so much?, although a little slow in some areas i feel there is plenty for you to discover in this story. Immediately upon finishing my first feeling is great story and then where is the next.
As always the narrror shines and makes the story move along smoothly.

    "History and legend enter sci-fi"

Welcome to The future. Humanity was almost eradicated. Saves by the creation of a man who virtually nothing is known about. A man whose description matches that of other men who throughout history always came to the fore in mans time of need. He did great deeds and deeds that he is reviled for as well. Now another man with the same features is here and man is again in need of a hero. Will those in power be able to see past their selfish desires and help or will they betray this man for the secrets and powers they desire. Great story with twists and curves all around. "A quick read and good performance"

Eon is a quick and enjoyable read, although not without it's faults. Set in the far future humanity is protected by a shield - the Chronos Ring - a defense system that keeps the worst of the aliens out. But it now seems that one alien race, hellbent on destroying the humans, have found a way in. Ian Lotus, a mysterious man, is the only person who can stop them.

The story of The Chronos Ring and the Parsnaak only really form the background and the instigation of the story, with aren't actually in the meat of it. Who Ian Lotus is and why he is important is the real story here. The Parsnaak a more of a macguffin to get the story moving, only really showing up at the start and near the climax. They are a remote threat, created to build tension, but not really playing into the story.

The story, with it's twists is generally really enjoyable. It keeps moving a a good pace, invests well in the main character(s), and keeps you guessing as to the true nature of things.

It is the execution, rather than the story, that is lacking. The Parsnaak are part of the issues with this book - they are poorly defined - we are told they are powerful and terrible, but not really shown. When they are shown they fall into a almost cliche gruff military alien mold.

The Chronos Ring, and the extent of humanity are another issue. Humans have expanded throughout the galaxy. The Chronos Ring "protects humanity". Except it seems it protects earth, not humanity, with it being a specific space installation in one place. The exact extent of the Ring and of humanities ventures into space is vague and unsatisfying.

Finally, the way Lotus acts towards the female lead doesn't ring true. They start as adversaries and then work together, but Lotus forgiving and moving on doesn't come across as realistic.

Overall, it is flawed but enjoyable. I imagine with further works, as the writing matures, Hardman shall be an author I shall read again.

Mikael Naramore is becoming a narrator that I pick up his work based almost solely on him being the narrator. He's almost always good. Investing in characters, ensuring all the easily distinguishable and that the emotions are accurately conveyed. He's well paced, clear nad engaging.

Much like the writing of the Parsnaak, Naramore's narration of them is over the top cliche. but otherwise he is really enjoyable here.

    "Passable."

I've been listening to a lot of books since the last month and it helps that this book is on a shorter end. I wasn't bored by this book but I wasn't entertained either. The writing style felt immature and childish at several places. There weren't any really tense moments or any situation where I was on the edge of the seat. Pretty meh, tbh.

    "A Good Performance"

I enjoyed the story even though two bits of the science seemed off. The narrator does a good job with a variety of voices and the female voice was passable, but annoying after a few hours. That might have been the intent.
