Summary

The final instalment in the critically-acclaimed Grim Company trilogy.

The Age of Ruin is near complete: in the far North the Nameless stirs beneath the Spine Mountains and demonspawn push ever southwards; from the West the Fade have returned, vowing to purge the realm of humankind; and an ancient weapon, forged in the Godswar, has once again been unleashed to ravage the land.

Weakened by in-fighting, the surviving Magelords are unable - or unwilling - to use their power to defend humanity. The last spark of hope rests with the surviving members of the Grim Company: Davarus Cole, Brodar Kane and Eremul the Halfmage.

Waste of time

First book showed promise, second book was weak but I was committed. This book, was just terrible. It is like the author had a vague idea of a story line, changed his mind between two and a half plots and just mergered it all together. There are about 5 different endings that follow on from each other, so just choose your favorite I guess. In this book, all the characters bar two talk and act like 5 year old kids. I can't explain more without giving spoilers. Can't understand how it got good reviews.

Once again, the talented Joe Jamison is amazing!!

I did enjoy this book quite a lot, however, once again there are rather a lot of similarities to GoT and even the Lord of the Ring. But, there are enough differences to keep me interested and the narrator (Joe Jamison) is phenomenal! He creates and imbues so much passion, strength of character, depth and extreme variance between characters themselves, that it's easy to immerse oneself into the story and recognise each character simply by voice/accent. He's so good, I'm going to search for other books he's narrated!

No spoilers here, but I think other listeners will experience a range of emotions pertaining to key protagonists/antagonists in that I personally invested emotion into them and felt great sadness, hope, elation, devastation, disgust and despair at various times during the story. Luke Scull has the potential to be a good/great writer, however, I think this 3 part series resembles parts of the aforementioned epic stories so I think he has a way to go before he comes into his own. I may be selling him short but these are the first books I've listened to by him... he may very well have more originally creative stories I've not yet found. But Not Jamison.? He's fantastic!!

Gritty and moving

As an older guy I really liked the character of Brodar Kane but then all the characters were brilliant. Great trilogy well worth listening to.

5 Star listen

Finished all three I the series now and loved the trilogy. Felt much like a Joe Abercrombie set of books, dark, brooding and intelligently written. All the characters where believable and the changes wrought on on them especially Cole felt understated. Started listening to the series because of the narrator who is wonderful as always. Sad to see the end of this tale hope the author returns to the world in the future.
