Publisher's Summary

For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME).

When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages.

In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line.

Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild. The communicability and mortality rates are devastating, leaving only small pockets of survivors scattered throughout the countryside.

Commune: Book One is the story of one small group of survivors who must adapt to a primitive, hostile world or die. As they learn the rules of this new era, they must decide how far they're willing to go to continue living, continually asking themselves the same question daily: is survival worth the loss of humanity?

"brilliant end of the world saga in the making"

I've read two "end of the world" books and this one was brilliant. I won't name the other one as I got bored half way and returned it although that book seems to have high ratingsb for some reason. With regards to this book in question I found the characters brilliant and RC Bray bought them to life with his narration.
it's scary to think that if the world ended it would probably descend into a chaos like that described in the book - everyone for themselves splitting into good and evil. However you would hope that, like the book, a number of good people existed. This books drops you into such situations and describes the inner demons everyone faces while trying to survive having to do things they would never have done in normal circumstances.
I'm looking forward to the next book, its a shame that my favourite character in the book won't be in it!

    "Amazing characters!!"

When the world is hit with a CME bigger than the Carrington Event, things quickly go to hell, but humanity perseveres and they try to survive. Just as things are starting to come together, a sickness spreads and kills even more of the survivours. Now we are following a group of people who are intent on trying to make things work.

This book surprised me a lot!! While it follows the basic rule of a post apocalyptic book, it isn't the plot that makes this shine, it's the characters and it's the way the story is told! It's told to us as a story, the narrator is recording how the Commune came to be but we also see the same story told through multiple characters POV. Now, that can sometimes be awful but it works here, and works well!!

This focuses on 4 people. Jake, Billy, Amanda and her daughter, Lizzy. How the four came together is something you will have to read the book to find out, because I don't want to spoil it! But it's a heartbreaking journey for some of them. I loved how they came together, and I think the author does a fantastic job with it. But it doesn't just stop with them meeting, nope, the journey continues as a group and is captivating and addicting!! I absolutely devoured it.

Every single character is well written and developed, which is rare in a debut book. There is depth to these characters that really captured my attention. Amanda and Lizzy have a hard journey, but they come out stronger. Billy is a great character and a real father figure. Jake is mysterious and I really can't wait to find out more about him. He is a fantastic character!! I also liked the fact that there isn't a love story here! While there's potential, I'm glad the author didn't feel the need to create one, especially after what Amanda endured.

In all, this is a story of survival when nothing is available anymore. The author really makes you realise how things can change in the blink of an eye! He puts a lot into the world building, but even more into the character development and what he has created was a memorable read, and I can not wait for the next one!!!

R.C Bray... let's all bow down to the awesomeness that is R.C Bray! His range of tones and voices is impressive and he really knows how to tell a story!! A good story teller can draw you into the book and make you forget everything else, well this is what Bray does. He drew me in and made the story effortless to listen to. It played in my head like a movie and I loved it!! He is a narrator I could listen to every day and feel like I was listening to different people. Amazing performance!!

I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

    "Wow!!!"

I don't know where to begin. I really loved this book. I enjoyed the characters, the narration was amazing, the pace was perfect, the amount of action vs storyline was balanced and the different style of telling was interesting.
The story follows 3 adults and 1 child. It is told through 2 of the adult's perspective for the purpose of documenting their history. It was easy to follow and since this was the first book I've listened to utilizing this format, I found it to be not only an interesting way to tell the story, but also refreshingly different. The group struggles to make their way to a remote location in Wyoming owned by one of the members after a plague that took place shortly after a CME. The author doesn't dwell much on those 2 events, just that they happened, they sucked and now the people left had to figure how to live. There's touches on prepping, types of weapons and other items, but not to distraction. This is more a story about the people.
The characters develop during the book, they react accordingly to events and are believable. The narration is outstanding. Simply outstanding! There's a little humor, funny banter, some very real and disturbing descriptions (not many, but necessary) and language. Nothing that detracts, just realistic. Not a lot of swearing (which wouldn't have bothered me in the least if it had, but I know many readers don't like a lot of swearing). Not a lot of graphic violence, just a person matteroffactly retelling what it was like.
I could go on and on, but please take a chance and spend the credit or even the cash, this book is worth it.

    "Great Post-Acop Story, Awesome Narration"

Well plotted, different take on the after-the-world-ends genre. Great character development. Flawless narration. If you're new to R.C. Bray, the narrator, he could take a mediocre book and make it good. Here he takes a really good book and makes it better.

    "This book is mind blowing!!!"

I love this book, it is so great I found myself listening throughout the day and waiting in my car for a scene to end. You want to find out what happens next. If you like worlds with nothing this is great. Also if you have a weak stomach some of the scenes are so great in writing I felt my stomach turn.

    "very enjoyable"

I have been listening to audio books before audible books started, bought the CD's. There is not a better narrator then R C Bray. Ran into him with Skippy, if you do not know who Skippy is you have a treat coming. I started to listen to this book because of R C Bray and I was not disappointed. It is a great listen. The book has it all-good story, tension, humor, good characters. This book was one I didn't want to have end, I savored listening to it. When you finish you are asking for more. Hoping there is more..going to go hunt for book 2.

    "Exceptional"

RC Bray is amazing. Take the time to listen to his read. It is exceptional.

Best apocalyptic book in a long time. Since Alas Babylon I have been a fan of the genre. This book stands out in that it doesn't rely on fantastic events. I related to the characters. There is a constant feeling of being involved in the story. The writing style is so rich I hit rewind many times. RC Bray has a way with voices that gave the words punch. The most powerful moment in the book caused me to cry as I drove. I love stories written as if characters are each telling their own story. It makes the story real. Highly recommend this book.
