Summary

It is said that when war threatens the world, one individual will be selected by prophecy to lead the Shadow Warriors out of the Land of Mist and reclaim the freedom that has been stolen.

Shanti has grown up under the constant threat of war. Since she helped her people defeat a raiding party by using a special power, she's been a hunted woman. Carrying rare abilities and an uncanny fighting aptitude, Shanti is the only hope of salvation for her people. The problem is, she doesn't believe in her own divinity, and when she flounders, she nearly fails in the duty hanging so heavy on her shoulders.

It seems like any other day when Sanders and his band of misfit boys find a foreign woman clinging to life in the wastelands. Oblivious to the weapon they now have in their possession, they are content to harbor the mysterious woman until she is well enough to continue her journey. But when the war spreads its arms and lands on her borrowed doorstep, Shanti has no choice but to reveal her secrets, plunging her saviors into danger. If they band with her, they will face certain death. But to trade her to Xandre, the warlord desperate to add her to his war machine, would be to give up their entire way of life.

War is coming. The only question is this: Which side do you choose?

A Fantastic Start To This Gripping Epic Fantasy.

I must confess that I bought this book back in 2015 after reading and loving K.F. Breene’s Darkness series but it’s been waiting patiently on my Kindle since then. High/epic fantasy isn’t my first choice of reading material and the length of this book kept putting me off. I added the Audible narration recently hoping that would help me with the genre and number of pages.

It wasn’t long into this book before I was asking myself why I’d put off reading it for so long; I thought it was amazing and I was completely engrossed. I liked the way Ms Breene introduced us to her new fantasy world, its history and our heroine, Shanti. I thought it had a great plot to start off a series with and had a good amount of action-packed fighting scenes as well as heart-wrenching images of the horrors of war but this balanced beautifully with hope, love and fantastically written banter. As a narrated book, I was impressed with Caitlin Davies‘s performance; loving the pace at which she read the story and her tonal adjustments for the dialogue. I would definitely buy books narrated by her in the future.

I enjoy a story more when our lead female character is intelligent, resilient and has a good sense of humour and I wasn’t disappointed here. Shanti was all of these and more. In fact, I liked the way that Shanti, The Captain (Cayan), Commodore Sanders, the five boys of the Honour Guard – Marc, Xavier, Rachie, Leilius and Gracas – and all of the characters in this story were written, none of them were flat 2-dimensional creations, they all felt very real for me. Oh, and like most Brits I do love a bit of banter – this story has plenty of it! I found myself COL (Chuckling Out Loud) throughout, usually at the banter and quips coming out of Shanti’s mouth.

I loved the fact that the adventure aspect of this story kept me guessing what would happen next, the action kept me on the edge of my seat, the raw emotions and growing relationships, both platonic and romantic, made me go all dewy eyed as well as put a smile on my face and there was also the glimmering hope of building passion that set my tummy a-tingling in anticipation. *oooh*

I didn't want to stop reading this book! It had everything that I look for in a great story; intelligent writing style that's easy to read, main characters with depth of personality that I can connect to and believe in, depth of character in the supporting cast, believable background story and setting and a balanced mix of relationship, tension, action and mystery.

Due to the graphic nature of some of the more violent scenes, I would recommend this book to adults who are not offended by this sort of content. So if you enjoy independent, capable heroines and strong alpha heroes, tense often traumatic and brutal confrontations within epic fantasy adventures, then this book may be your next favourite read. It's certainly left me wanting to read more of The Warrior Chronicles series.

Too much - my review contains spoilers!

There is just an abundance of rape and sexual stuff in it that just makes this a very uncomfortable ride to...nothing. It ends with a cliffhanger and that after very very little has actually happened.

MC is this annoying martyr of a woman that likes to threaten everyone and brag about how normal sex and nakedness is for her. Yet half way into the book she's apparently uncomfortable at a naked man being close to her bra. It's inconsistent in many ways and feels more like a low key weird sexual fantasy book than a actual fantasy book.

Sorry to say I'm not a fan of the execution, 2 stars though because the premise was good and I liked a few of the characters that weren't the MC or the captains.

Both badly written, and poorly read

Maybe with an enthusiastic voice actor who could read this book with some feeling, and more than a single sentence at a time without resetting and repeating the same tone, this book might have come across better than it did.

I couldn't listen past the first chapter, it sounded like it was being read using an off brand text to speech engine.

I even checked to see if it was my own bias, and asked someone else to listen in without saying why; they immediately commented on how annoying the voice was

Poor quality

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Better writing, depth and storyline.

Would you ever listen to anything by K. F. Breene again?

Probably not.

Any additional comments?

This book was 'chosen' due to the large number of positive reviews, though sometimes I wonder whether I am listening to the same story as everyone else. The story lacked decent writing, depth or characterisation. I had to stop listening quite early on as I really didn't care what happened to the story or the characters. I have no trouble with sticking with slow start epics (Wheel of time series, and the Malazan empire books), but there has to be some spark or element of decent writing that holds you to the end, and make you grateful you stuck with them to the end. I couldn't find it with this book, and I plan to send it back for a refund. I am desperate to find decent new science fiction epics to read.

new author for me very enjoyable

Good story. Unique characters. Loved it. Every character enhances the plot. Well done. New author for me will be happy to look out for future stories in this series or any future stories.

Ruined by narrator

After forcing myself to listen to the story rather than the narrator, (as I've enjoyed other books by K F Breene) it's a shame that her stories are being ruined by the narrator. Her monotonous tone is perfect for a 1930s detective short story! Once other characters were introduced she began to use different voices which helped and is the only reason I'm listening to book 2. I wouldn't pay to listen to her. In fact her voice stopped me from buying another book a few months back. It's sad she's put other listeners off, if you can persevere keep listening as it is a good story. I found it easier to listen to her while cooking or cleaning, not being 100% focused on that voice does help. Good luck!

Loved it

Action packed from first chapter to last.
Have a brain tumour so find it hard to concentrate for long but this story kept me interested for the duration of the book. Am going to download the second book in the series.

The story is good but

The diction of the narrator is less than it should be .. When there is a 't' or a double 'tt'' is should be sounded as such, not ignored and replaced with a breathy sound. Put me right off the book and the series

It's OK

the story is really good, the narrator ruins it, completely ruins it to the point I made it only half way through and only stopped because of the narrator

Really enjoyed

I had to get used to the narrator but 2 chapters in I was really starting to enjoy the story. By the middle I couldn't stop listening. Great story.
