Publisher's Summary

The ancient pact between mankind, Heaven, and Hell has been broken. And this upstart wizard's quest for vengeance may have just kicked off Armageddon. So, time for a drink...or maybe two.

Already plagued with sinister night terrors that could qualify him as a card-carrying psychopathic insomniac, Nate can barely even manage to put his pants on in the morning, let alone pick teams for the Apocalypse. But when he's framed as a demon sympathizer, condemned by the Armies of Heaven, and hunted down by both his allies and the Four Horsemen, this wizard doesn't think it can get any worse. Then they take away his magic. And a wizard without magic stands no chance against the forces of Heaven and Hell....

"great follow up, can't wait till the next"

This was a great follow up to the obsidian son, the main character is being fleshed out and the magic system just keeps getting better. This book hinted towards darkness to come, but the author does a great job of keeping things light and humorous instead of just depressing adversity. I was a bit thrown by the change of narrators, the new narrator is a bit dry for this type of material, he seems better suited to hard boiled mystery/detective stories, rather than fantasy, but he did an admirable job, especially towards the end.
Bottom line, this is a great urban fantasy series and I have every intention of sticking with it, I only wish the rest of the books where available on audio...

    "Best follow up ever!"

When Nate loses his magic, I thought I was finished with the story. Since I finished the book in record time, I guess magicless Nate was not so important. Nate was still able to deliver action and still go in for the fight versus retreating. But he really did not have an option since his presence to any of his adversaries or friends (zealous wizards, demons, angels, ex-lovers, Pandora and the Horsemen) meant his death was imminent.

It was his moral compass; his witty banter and a friend’s need to keep him alive that gives us the action pack story that kept me riveted. Mythology and ancient history woven into the story plot is bonus for us sci-si & fantasy readers.

Nate Temple is plagued with terrifying night terrors of carnage and chaos that could qualify him as a card-carrying psychopathic insomniac when he is thrown into his worst nightmare. “An Angel, a wizard, and a Horseman of the Apocalypse walk into a bar… Nate Temple has authority issues. earned the hatred and envy of everyone in St. Louis – especially the monsters. His entourage is gone for the weekend, the ruling body of wizards stripped him of his powers and the city itself fights to shut him and his billion dollar company down.

    "Great follow-up"

I really enjoyed this second installment of the Temple series. While I thought the narrator of the 1st book was pretty good, I liked the new narrator much better. Looking forward to book 3.

"Come on Nate. Thinking is not a crime."

So Nate Temple is still a moron...but he is also quite entertaining.

    But oh so dumb.

So many of his issues would be solved by just a modicum of common sense. I feel bad when some heroes get beat up, but when Nate does, I feel like he totally deserves it. Its still a fun ride.
