Publisher's Summary

A selection of 22 best science-fiction stories chosen by the author himself and representative of the full range of his 30-year career.

The collection covers a wide range, from the day after tomorrow to the distant future, and from our own front doorstep to the farthest corners of the galaxy. Behind the idea of each story is the human factor that gives the story its meaning.

Brian Wilson Aldiss is one of the most important voices in science fiction writing today. He wrote his first novel while working as a bookseller in Oxford. Shortly afterwards, he wrote his first work of science fiction and soon gained international recognition. Adored for his innovative literary techniques, evocative plots, and irresistible characters, he became a Grand Master of Science Fiction in 1999. Brian Aldiss recently celebrated his 80th birthday and is still writing, to ardent applause.

    Story
"Didn't finish - 2nd star for benefit of doubt"

I could not finish this audiobook.
The recording quality was poor. Artefacts from too much compression or processing which did nothing to help its other problems.
The pace of the writing and the pace of the narrator did not complement each other. It just came across as listless and meandering. The narrator seemed to constantly want to inject emphasis where none was probably warranted., the effect came across as a little hammed up? Add to this that the style of the first story was I think intended to be a little impenetrable and it just made the previous problems an irritating distraction. I couldn't risk paying for it all to be this disappointing and it doesn't seem right to listen to the whole thing and then get a refund.
Tempted to give 1 star but that doesn't seem fair as I only listened to the first couple of hours.

    Story
    "Background noise"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Highly recommend it,but I am bias. A big B.W.A. fan. Includes the short story

Who was your favorite character and why?

The robot teddy, of course. Creepy!

What about Arthur Blake’s performance did you like?

Fantastic. Great intonations and humorous delivery of character dialogue.

Was Best SF Stories of Brian W Aldiss worth the listening time?

    Yes.Very much.

    Any additional comments?

The only disappointment and what I think spoiled a great listen was the audible page turning, plus hearing another muffled reading from what seemed another room at times.

    "SUPER-TOYS LAST ALL SUMMER LONG"

MAN IN HIS TIME, THE BEST SCIENCE FICTION STORIES OF BRIAN W. ALDISS
22 stories of which I really liked seven and the rest not at all. The book is copyrighted 1988 and covers stories from 1955 to 1986. I am a big fan of the older well written stories, but have never been a fan of the stories, from most writers, from the 60's and 70's. In the fifties authors wrote about space travel and living on other worlds. In the sixties and seventies, the writing turns to drugs, and psychedelic musings, which I'm not groovy with. In the fifties, things happen. In the sixties it is all in your head. It was a fad thing.

    WHO CAN REPLACE A MAN
My favorites were Outside, The Failed Men, All The World's Tears, Poor Little Warrior, Who Can Replace A Man, The Girl And The Robot With Flowers and Super-Toys Last All Summer Long.

    I SAY IT'S TRUE AND I DON'T TALK IDOL
This was actually worth a credit to me, since I have the ability to skip stories once I realize, I am not a fan.

    Story
    "Uneven quality of tales"
What did you like best about Best SF Stories of Brian W Aldiss? What did you like least?

His tales cover a large of themes inside general scifi.

What did you like best about this story?

The author has great moments of humour.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Mr. Arthur Blake does not have a good rhythm and diction; sometimes, it's possible hear him swallowing and turning pages.

Was Best SF Stories of Brian W Aldiss worth the listening time?

    Yes.

    "Not a winner for me."

I am a Alissa fan. However, this is not his best work. Also the narrators voice bored me to the point of deleting the book before I was half through it.
