Summary

Geralt of Rivia is on a mission to save his ward, Ciri, and with her the world, in this third novel in the best-selling Witcher series that inspired the Netflix show and video games.

The Wizards Guild has been shattered by a coup and, in the uproar, Geralt was seriously injured. The Witcher is supposed to be a guardian of the innocent, a protector of those in need, a defender against powerful and dangerous monsters that prey on men in dark times.

But now that dark times have fallen upon the world, Geralt is helpless until he has recovered from his injuries.

While war rages across all of the lands, the future of magic is under threat and those sorcerers who survive are determined to protect it. It's an impossible situation in which to find one girl - Ciri, the heiress to the throne of Cintra, has vanished - until a rumour places her in the Niflgaard court, preparing to marry the Emperor.

Injured or not, Geralt has a rescue mission on his hands.

I mistook the stars reflected in a pond at night..

My comments are going to be about the whole series rather than one book in particular. The reason is they are all pretty much the same anyway and no spoilers are involved.
I eventually got around to listening to this series. This is the first set of books I have listened to without having read the books. I had high hopes having heard so much about them, the games and I really enjoyed the tv series on Netflix. Boy, was I disappointed! To coin the phrase used so often, "I mistook the stars reflected in a pond at night for those in the sky".
Narrated by: Peter Kenny I can't fault him for his story telling. I just wish there was more of a story to tell. Quite how any of these books became popular, I'll never know. They are a waffley, boring meander that at time goes no where and have side characters that are inconsequential and often add nothing to the story. Too much dialogue, too many names to keep up with, not enough excitement. I want a story to draw me in and keep me interested, to keep me wanting to listen or turn the page. Unfortunately, those moments during this whole series seem to be fleeting. I really wanted to like them, but at times found my self shouting, "Get on with it!" It got so bad at times I probably missed better parts because I had switched off mentally and when I came to I didn't care enough to go back and listen again. At times it really didn't matter any way beacuse the story was concentrating so much on nonsensical dialogue that not much had actually happened and I hadn't missed anything of any consequence. I think the whole series could have been condensed into one or two very good books.

Great story, great narrator

Another great novel by Sapkowski, seamlessly marrying dark fantasy with comedic relief; I found myself listening to the Dwarfs playing Barrel over and over.

An interesting ironic take on the classic fantasy tale of a group of bold adventures rallying together on a quest to save a fair maiden.

I’ve really grown on Peter Kenny as a narrator starting from the Last Wish to now in the third novel of the series. At this point I couldn’t imagine the series with a different narrator.

Very enjoyable

Much better than the previous one (which I found both slow and hard to follow at times due to all the various sorcerers). This part of the Witcher’s tale is more fun, more interesting, more emotional and generally better. The performance is, as ever, first-rate.

A Story that gets better with each book

Another excellent addition to The Witcher serise. Its Fellowship of the Ring set in the world of the Witcher, a great ensemble of characters coming together in search of Ciri. One of the things I like about this book so much is the new characters not just in the way they interact with each other but how it builds and develops the story. Can't wait to listen to the next one.

The Witcher series is absolutely enthralling.

Some of the best books I've ever read, (heard)! The narrator is simply amazing, the characters are really interesting, the whole story is fantastic.

A match made in heaven 😍

I simply and utterly LOVE everything about this book (and the rest in the serie).
I love the lore, the world, all the characters and at last, but definitely not least, I love, I love, I love the narrator! Peter Kenny is the frosting on the cake. ❤
