Summary

The ninth book in the bestselling Chronicles of St Mary's series which follows a group of tea-soaked disaster magnets as they hurtle their way around History. If you love Jasper Fforde or Ben Aaronovitch, you won't be able to resist Jodi Taylor.

They say you shouldn't push your luck. Max gives her own luck a massive shove every day - and it's only a matter of time until luck pushes back...

January 1536 - the day of Henry VIII's infamous jousting accident. Historians from St Mary's are there in force, recording and documenting. And, arguing - obviously.

A chance meeting between Max and the Time Police leads to a plan of action. And, it's one that will have very serious consequences - especially for Max. Her private life is already more than a little rocky. But with Leon recovering and Matthew safe in the future there will never be a better opportunity to bring down Clive Ronan, once and for all.

From Tudor England to the burning city of Persepolis - and from a medieval siege to a very nasty case of 19th century incarceration - Max is determined that this time, he will not escape.

Not one of her best, though still good

I didn't enjoy this as much as I have the rest of this series, though it was still well worth a listen. There were a lot of back references to other incidents - some of which I wasn't able to remember - though I have listened to all of the series. I found it difficult to put down, Max and Leon were good fun as always, though there was a slightly darker side to this one. I enjoyed the visit to former times, it was very interesting to discover how the day to day lives of people panned out.

I also have an issue with Zara Ramm's pronunciation of 'wandering' (walking about) that comes out as 'wondering' - (thinking about). Apart from that one thing I cannot imagine anyone who would narrate this series as well as she does.

5 stars!

This was amazing as usual! slightly slower paced than the usual books as we spent a lot of time in one place but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I did not see that twist coming at the end (I never do), I'm excited for the next book!

Still Delivers

What made the experience of listening to An Argumentation of Historians the most enjoyable?

Dare I say finding the last chapter after learning it was missing?

No, sorry, I love listening to the St Mary's books because they are so well written and because Zara Ramm does such a good job of the narration.

What other book might you compare An Argumentation of Historians to, and why?

Nothing I can think of, really. Jodi found her niche and while there are a few copyists out there, none have the talent to draw me in.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

No comment, spoiler.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, but that's a spoiler too.

Any additional comments?

All right, I'm not sure this is an area you could park TB2 in but ... having read A Travel in Time (where the Time Police could track Max by her tag) I'm mildly confused as to why they can't track Ronin the same way. There's no mention of him having a tag removed in any of the books. Maybe it's the sort of thing you take as read and go on with the story but to me it seems a glaring hole.

Loved it, though I feel it was a bit long in the middle. But still thoroughly enjoyable.

Gripping through lots of twists and turns

Just as you think one thing will happen it turns out to be another.
They still haven’t got Clive Ronan though.

The best yet!

These books just keep getting better. Thank you Jodi - I now know more about history than ever before. I am left with an insatiable appetite for history as well as everything else you have written! My ideal stories are so beautifully narrated by Zara...I can lose myself in ... contemporary time... whenever I want.
