Summary
The Imperials have devised a cunning new method of destroying Rebel worlds. Captain Leo Blake is largely responsible for both our survival and our current predicament. He and his crew are infamous among the stars. As a result, when ships of an unknown configuration begin flowing out of swirling rifts above Earth, Blake is called upon again to deal with the problem.
But the approaching fleet isn't what it seems. They're employing an entirely new way to exterminate Rebels. They will accept nothing less than conquering Earth - or, better yet, destroying all life on our planet.
Alpha Fleet is the third book in the Rebel Fleet series.

Running Out of Steam
The first book in this series, Rebel Fleet, was every bit the kind of story I have come to expect and love from the prolific B. V Larson. It was fast paced, full of mystery and intrigue and had all the elements that Larson does so well. Sure, it could be argued that some of those elements were variations on a theme which, I suppose to a certain extent might be expected coming from the same author. However, they were in a fresh mix of characters and situations which made for an enjoyable book.
Orion Fleet, the second part to this series, wasn't quite so good but did offer up much of what I was looking for. I realize that it can be difficult to keep things fresh especially once the hard work of establishing a new series has been done but I feel that this third instalment, Alpha Fleet, has seemingly run out of steam to a great extent. This is a phenomenon I've seen from Larson before and indeed from other writers where they write themselves into a corner as all the best work has already been done in the first book of the series and there's nowhere else to go. The Lost Colonies 3 book series from Larson springs to mind as a classic example of this and it so far appears that the Rebel Fleet books may turn out to go the same way petering out by the third book. To be fair, one difference here is that the former series did appear to tie things up and finish off the trilogy. I suspect Larson knew that despite the promise and scope of that series that it had run its course and that he needed to put an end to it. Alpha Fleet has no such finality to it so it does appear that Larson believes there is more gas in the tank for this set of stories.
Alpha Fleet to me was somewhat of a disappointment as I felt that the book was strung out somewhat with nothing of any real substance going on for the majority of the story. Larson kept things going with a series of relatively minor incidents or plot developments but nothing substantial that kept me that interested. Larson, however, is such a skilled writer that he is able to pull this off to a degree without it feeling too obvious he's doing so. Things do pick up a pace but it's left towards the end of the book with some interesting developments. Thus, I have concluded that Alpha Fleet might be what you could consider a "bridging" book between the previous and next instalments and something he put out there mainly to keep the series alive while he gave himself more time to come up with a more interesting story.
For anyone new to Larson by way of this series I would say don't be put off if you felt the same way about this novel. Larson has created the excellent and very consistently good Star Force series that covers 12 books and so he is quite capable of writing a strong and compelling story arc over so many books. With the Lost Colonies and Alpha Fleet books I get the impression that Larson is venturing off into projects that may or may not go somewhere simply because he can or perhaps his contractual obligations force him to do so, I don't know. I would much prefer Larson to focus more on his current 7 book series in the form of the Undying Mercenaries saga. This series has proved to be much more consistent and interesting on the whole.
Really good, as ever, to see continuity in terms of the narrator used. Mark Boyett does a sterling job as usual and has become the voice of the majority of Larson's stories so hats off to the publishers for this.
Alpha Fleet is not a particularly bad read but not quite the standard I've come to expect from this writer. It tends to meander a bit with no clear plot and it does feel that Larson was literally making it up as he went along. I hold out hope that Larson can refresh this series in his next instalment. If not, then perhaps he should just lay this series to rest as he did with the Lost Colonies one.

Disappointing end to an entertaining trilogy
After enjoying the 2 sequels to this book I must say this was the weakest of the 3. The story as a whole seems less thought out and the dialog and characters seem more bland then in the previous 2 books.

OK space battles plus a randy commander
It's an ok listen, A little simple in characters that match this authors other book series pretty well (as does the theme, IE enemies try to invade, earth struggles but wins over with tackics). In this series the main character is somewhat more randy however, wanting to bonk most of his female crew along with any alien women he comes across. As with his other books they make a good ongoing read, that keeps you wanting a bit more.
