Story
Brinkley Springs is a quiet little town. Some say the town is dying. They don't know how right they are. Five mysterious figures are about to pay a little visit to Brinkley Springs. They have existed for centuries, emerging from the shadows only to destroy, to kill. To feed. They bring with them terror and carnage, and leave death and blood in their wake. As the night wears on, Brinkley Springs will be quiet no longer. Screams will break the silence. But when the sun rises again, will there be anyone left to hear?

Don’t think about it...don’t talk about it...and if you feel a prickling on the back of your neck...don’t turn around! Matt Hardison doesn’t believe in the Shadowstealer, an evil spirit that could steal a person’s shadow and demand they sacrifice pieces of themselves. It was just a local boogeyman, a gruesome campfire yarn to frighten youngsters; not something that adults took seriously. The Shadowstealer is Matt’s new novel, a bestseller featuring the creepy legend that frightened him as a child.

Editors Randy Chandler and Cheryl Mullenax put the call out to horror writers and editors of extreme stories, the hardcore stuff that breaks boundaries and trashes taboos, the transgressive tales you can't "unread" (as Chuck Palahniuk says). Some of the stories you'll find here are loaded with very graphic descriptions of violence, sex, and depravities, while others may contain only one shocking moment of brutality. In others, the hardcore aspect may be less graphic and subtler than you might expect.

It has many names: Bigfoot...Yeti...Sasquatch. But whatever it is, it’s out there in the woods and leaving a trail of blood and severed heads behind it. For John Moon, a half-mad Indian, it is a spirit that holds the key to his inner self. He worships its power and he’ll kill to protect it. Desperate, exhausted, half-starved, Moon will follow it wherever it goes. For Raymond Jason, killing it has become an obsession. He was the only survivor of a hunting trip to the Rockies where the hunters became the monster’s prey.

Not very entertaining
The stories are promised to be humorous, but they aren't, the many jokes land flat in their homophobic faces, and the horror never reaches even the simplest of chills. There is nothing goosebumps-worthy about the stories, and even though the basis of the stories is redneck life, it is more like the most cartoonish of stereotypes are plopped down in different situations, without the benefit of either comedic skill or terrifying tension. There's originality in some of the stories, like the one where rival clans get together to cleanse the world of demons, but the delivery is faulty. The narration is alright, although most of the time the characters sounded the same, with no particular distinction. Overall, perhaps it is enough to pass the time, but not worth a re-listen.

Need a laugh!
At first I thought corny but the stories are so bad they are funny and you can not put the audio down. Being from the old south 1960 I could bring these characters alive in my mind due I knew people like them and behaved as they did. In listening to thus audible in many way brought fond memories. These were good old red neck in the truest for and manner you never see or hear them in their full glory like the stories told here.
The author did an awesome job writing and telling these stories and with the narrator put breath into each and ever character.

Hey y'all, watch this!
The reason I gave the book four stars is because the stories varied in quality. But for the most part, this book is a pleasure to listen to. From what I recall, most of these stories were just humorous. I can't particularly remember any scary ones, but it's been over a month since I listened to it. But it's definitely worth buying! I was sorry when it ended.

Quick, somebody get me a banjo!
Quick, somebody get me a banjo!
This one that has been staring me down from by bookshelf for waaay too long. It’s about dang time I done got to it.
Turns out Scary Rednecks is a pretty good and appropriately inappropriate collection of backwood inspired shorts. There are little devils in the outhouse, catfish Gods, Snake bit dicks, UFO’s, bad juju and badder voodoo. A little bit of everything that goes with redneck horror and even a little bloodsucker moonshine to wash it all down. Comedy, horror, gore and more.
As with most collections there were a few I liked better than others, but for the most part these tales were enjoyable with only one or two that were a bit uneven for me. 3.5+ Stars.

Lacks rednecks, scares, or horrors
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The performance was adequate; the material was disappointing.
What do you think your next listen will be?
If I can get me some Bubba the Monster Hunter, it would take care of this itch.
Have you listened to any of Arnie Mazer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Nope, but his performance in this book was fine.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment implies that I had expectations to begin with. Anger implies that the content was upsetting enough to offend me intellectually. Sadness implies that I spent my money poorly. So, yes, sadness.
Any additional comments?
I would have asked to return this book, but I was in a traffic jam for two ½ hours, and kept jumping back and forth to try to find something to listen to. Unsuccessfully. So I consider it unethical to ask for the money back.
Now, I love me some redneck monsters and redneck monster hunters, and I was hoping to get a little more of that stuff. So I feel cheated on several fronts. Firstly, I don’t really consider these characters Bubbas, okay? I mean, they’re guys who drink beer, but I couldn’t find anything else to associate them with, y’know, rednecks. And yes, rednecks can be homophobes and maybe I can handle that in a story (and maybe I can’t) but most stories after the first are jokes literally based on homophobia.
Wait - give me a second here. The source of humor is about the buddies freaking out about potentially being gay. There are several scenarios, each one set up to say, “If I did action X, would it make me gay?” and hilarity ensues. Not. There are other themes, most of which I didn’t finish because they made me really uncomfortable. Misogyny is a term thrown around a lot, and I don’t know if that’s what it was, but yuck.
So disappointing. I can’t wait for another episode of Bubba the Monster Hunter etc. for some quality redneck monsters and hunters.
