Story
In the year 2030 the Maunder Minimum, a period of solar inactivity, will cause a mini-ice age like it did between the years 1645 and 1710. When it does, Bishop will have to save her not only from the effects of severe weather but also from man himself. Maeve Tildon and her son Ben live alone in the rural town of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Since her husband died in the war, she's barely kept her head above water, and when the first freeze strikes in the fall, she's completely unprepared for what lies ahead.

Story
Westley Flagg isn't your usual lawbreaker. He's a poacher, a moonshiner, and a prepper, out of necessity. Despite trying to live on the straight and narrow, he knows the law can turn things on you in a heartbeat. When Wes has to come up with money for his Grandpa's surgery, he gets involved with an unsavory group. Living deep in poverty for most of his life, he's become resilient and flexible, but college education can only take him so far. A solar storm sends the northern lights as far south as Texas, and cascading failures in the grid cripple the nation. Now, without communications, Flagg has to prove he has what it takes to still survive.

Summary
From the best-selling author of the Graham's Resolution series comes book two in the Surrender the Sun series.
Conditions in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, are proving unsustainable in the year 2030. The mini ice age, caused by the Maunder Minimum effects, are brutal at best, and life systems are limited and failing fast. Bishop seeks a safe haven for his new family and the only answer leads him back to his nightmares.
Leaving the comfort of their luxury hotel is their only answer, but the journey may prove more perilous than their current existence.
For those who like a little vigilante justice in a post-apocalyptic world.

Great series!
It’s pretty hard to find a series narrated by Kevin Pierce that’s bad. I’m reviewing all three books since I pretty much listened to them all in two days. While the story isn’t alarmingly new it was definitely engaging and worth the credits I spent. I don’t want to give any details because honestly I don’t want to give spoilers.

A great story… but that cliffhanger!
4.5 out of 5 stars
Sanctuary was a really enjoyable book. A.R. Shaw really knows how to write. She had me on the edge of my seat for more than half of this book. And the action never really stopped. I thought for sure that now that things were a little safer that the series would slow down a bit, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Things aren’t safe and they are only getting more and more dangerous. I felt like one of the characters of the book. Just when I thought the snow and cold were going to stop, it gets colder and snowier.
The overall premise of this book felt incredibly real. I think that Shaw really did a lot of thinking and some research into what would happen (or what has happened) when things really start to take a turn. The flashback scene and the scene with the woman in the road were easily some of the most memorable in this series. And I can tell that some research went into the method of transportation that is utilized later in the book.
The first book in the Surrender the Sun series easily took one of my top books of 2016, and I hope that Shaw releases book three on audiobook in 2017. I don’t know if I can wait any longer to find out exactly what happens to everyone that I’ve grown to love throughout books one and two.
Overall, a great book with a nasty cliffhanger at the end. Just be prepared for that, it caught me completely off guard. I can tell you this, A.R. Shaw is a name to watch out for when it comes to new and unique Post-Apocalyptic stories.
I will still round up to five stars, but this book lost a half star on the aggressive cliffhanger. I don’t like them but have come to expect them, especially in books that are part of a series. I’ve noticed lately that more and more books are series based with an unknown number of books in them. I usually like knowing this is book 2 of X before diving in, but my love of all things post-apocalypse has lead me down a path into the darkness of the unknown series length.
I received a free copy of this audiobook which has not affected my review at all.

really different take on the end of the human race. I've listened to hundreds of post apocalyptic books over the last few years and the author is quickly becoming one of my favorite. I would tell you my favorite part but I don't want to give away anything . the narrator Kevin pierce can bring a story to life like no other

Why so short?
I have enjoyed the first two books but why not make it a total two books or even one? I read a lot of books in this genre and this one is ok. The continuity is not great and we don’t get any usable cold weather survival info. And what about the awesome natural medicine used by Jax to heal lungs and gunshots, no info there either. I also find it hard to believe that “modern “ cold weather survival gear from the year 2030 doesn’t provide protection from the cold better than animal hides. The characters are not really compelling enough to make me need to know what happens. I’m curious about book three but I have a rule about spending a credit on a book less than 5 hrs long. The first two were really too short. Total time for all three is less than 17hrs. Could have easily been two books and I would have felt less cheated.

The deep freeze continues.
The Maunder Minimum continues its oppressive deep freeze and will do so for years to come. Bishop realizes that he, Maeve, Ben, and Luna cannot remain in Coeur d'Alene. Housing and supplies are not sufficient to survive the mini ice age set upon them. New facilities are a must and the need to find such is immediate. Upon gaining access to an Osprey aircraft and its pilot Walt, Bishop learns of a bunker which would fill their needs quite nicely. The problem is that (a.) it is one thousand miles away and (b.) it is currently occupied. Gathering enough volunteers and former soldiers from his community of survivors, Bishop makes plans to assault the bunker. Should Bishop be successful in taking the bunker, he still needs the Osprey to make several shuttle runs of survivors from Coeur d'Alene. The shuttle service requires more aviation fuel than they have access to or know where to acquire it. Without the Osprey it would be a deadly trek across barren, frozen ground in sub-zero temperatures. With no resupply coming they had to make do with what they had. Is this mission even possible? Stay tuned my friends to find out!
