Summary

Arimnestos of Plataea has already lived through several lifetimes' worth of adventure, from being a rich man's slave in Ephesus to winning glory at the battle of Marathon against the might of the Persian Empire. But the gods - and the Persians - aren't finished with him yet.

As an experienced sea captain - his enemies might say pirate - he has a part to play in the final epic confrontation of the Long War between the Greeks and Persians, the Battle of Salamis. It is a battle where many debts of blood will be repaid, ancient grudges settled, fame won and treachery exposed, where the Greeks must finally bury their differences and fight as one - for against them Xerxes, the Great King, has assembled the greatest fleet the world has ever known, his sworn purpose to brutally extinguish the flame of freedom and make every Greek his slave.

Struggle for survival

This is the fifth book about the life of Arimnestos of Plataea. He has reached his mid-thirties and feeling his age and his wounds. This book is particularly interesting for the descriptions of how the various City States are gradually forced by the Persian threat to form a League and how they squabble and bicker and only at the very last minute join naval forces under Themistocles leadership. Their politics was not dissimilar to the bickering and bad-mouthing that took place over Brexit which makes this story very modern.
These books give me such pleasure. The detail of all the small things and the major battles, the seamanship, the comradery, the personalities, the strengths and frailties of the human mind. And his wedding was a thrilling climax to this book after all the vissisitudes that Arimnestos and his companions had had to endure.
Always at the back of mind I am wondering how much is based on historic reports and how much is fiction. I think on reflection it is quite clear but my curiosity has led me to purchase a copy of Heroditus which has be an accolade to the author.
Yes I would recommend this to anyone with a curiosity about historical events who loves all the details that make it such an interesting read.
I must also congratulate Peter Noble who reads the text so well so that the listener is in that world, lying on a Kline listening in to conversations, feeling the heat of the sun and the smell of the aromatic herbs and of course drinking smooth red wine.

Irritating vouce of narrator.

I love the history of Salamis but this narrator doesn't know how to speak from a book. I had to give up listening. He crucifies the prose.
