For fans of epic science fiction by masters like David Brin, Peter F. Hamilton, Ian Banks, Larry Niven, and Frank Herbert.

Captain Malick and the crew of the Pioneer are on a mission of exploration to the farthest reaches of the solar system. As they near the uncharted planet Sworld, they receive an unexpected distress call. Compelled to investigate, Malick and the crew discover a derelict ship carrying a cargo of five aliens in stasis, along with instructions to bring them aboard.

When their orbit deteriorates, they are marooned on the planet below with their new passengers. Determined to find a way home, Malick and the crew embark on an epic journey across Sworld. They discover a wondrous world full of new lifeforms and sentient species, but also dark mysteries and peril.

As Malick’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, the crew begins to question his motivations. They know little about him, and his past is shrouded in secrets. Now, plunged into an expedition through this bizarre and hostile alien planet, the crew will learn there is more to Malick than they ever imagined.

I don't normally leave reviews, but this book was too good to be quiet about. The news said we were in for a winter storm that could knock out power for days, so this time I got prepared. One of the things I did was select this book to listen to in case that happened, and it did. My family of six listened in spellbinding fascination to this incredible tale of science fiction exploration for two full days, and no one whined—that's no small feat.
The incredible detail and imagination of this world-building adventure is second to none, and I've read some great science fiction authors. Nothing is over-the-top, and everything is presented in an almost believable way. His judicious use of real science is excellent and easy to understand, even by my younger children. By the end of the story, you realize that you're just starting to peel back an onion with layers of secrets within secrets. My entire family wants to get together again and listen to the next volume—as a family. Unbelievable, that's how good the story is for readers of all levels. The narrator, who is also the author, did a marvelous job, I think. He is not a distant professional vocalist, but has a deep, warm, grandfatherly voice that's telling you a story by the fireplace. As my youngest said, five shooting stars!

Fantastic book!
