This true story of murder switches between the murderer and those trying to find him, and is expertly told, gripping right to the end. Highly recommended.

Brilliantly paced and detailed account of how the solving of this crime changed modern policing. Although this is a nonfiction account it is easy to listen to as if it were a novel. Why read novels mind when reality provides things stranger than fiction. I had already read the physical book and thoroughly enjoyed it and was curious to hear the narrated book. I wasn't disappointed, Steve Worsley does an excellent job.

Really well read, evoked time and place and gave a detailed and fascinating insight into the case, the forensic developments and the trial. Recommended

Excellent exploration of the forensic details of the case

A fascinating glimpse into the previously unheard (as far as I’m aware) story of a pivotal case in the history of forensics and murder investigations generally. I came across this book randomly (probably due to my high consumption of true crime content!) and I’m glad I did. I didn’t know the author but I’ve since seen that he was in the police, and this shows in his writing. My only small grumble is that I would have liked to learn more of the background of the various characters and of the time period in which this story unfolds. However, that’s a minor gripe when what you do get with this book is a rare glimpse behind the curtain of the novel procedures involved in the solving of a little known but historic case.

Absorbing and tightly written

This is a fascinating case and it did lead to huge advances in forensic science.

In my opinion, there is too little talk of the people, however - Ruxton and Bella's backgrounds are barely mentioned. The night of the murder is skipped over.

instead, the author waxes lyrical about how brilliant the police were, how brilliant the solicitors were, how brilliant the scientists were.

Again and again, we hear about the authorities. This is important of course but largely, I was reading this to hear about Ruxton, Bella, Mary Rogers and what led to this terrible murder. You don't get that in this book.
