You recovered once. Never go back.
Nobody warns you about the months after burnout. You’re sleeping again, functioning again, feeling like yourself again, and quietly at higher risk of burning out than at any other point in your life. Roberta Creek calls this stage the Fragile Middle, and it’s where recoveries are lost, one reasonable yes at a time.
Running on Full picks up where Running on Empty left off, with a complete, practical system for staying well:
- Build your Relapse Radar, a personal early-warning system made from your own history
- Budget your energy like money, with income, expenses, leaks, and an emergency fund
- Renegotiate old expectations with word-for-word scripts for work, family, and volunteering
- Protect yourself in the seasons that don't flex: caregiving, events, and the sandwich years
- Read your body's gauges, with straight-talk health chapters for women and for men
- Say yes to big ambitions again with four questions that keep the tank full
- Catch a slip in days instead of years with a five-step, no-shame storm drill
Sixteen chapters. Sixteen fill-in worksheets. Stories from the road in every chapter, and one promise: staying well is a learnable skill. Whether you read Running on Empty first or you're arriving freshly recovered on your own, this book meets you exactly where the other books stop, and keeps you moving forward.
You came back from empty. This is how you never go back.

I liked the energy-budget idea most. Looking at energy as income, expenses, leaks, and an emergency fund made the advice feel concrete, not like another vague reminder to “set boundaries.” The scripts for renegotiating expectations are useful, too. Some sections felt more relevant to my life than others, but I came away with a few tools I can actually use before I hit empty again.
