Story
Dear Listener, I know what you're thinking, is it some kind of macabre joke? How can Ruby Wax write a book about good news when the world is facing the worst disaster since the Plague? Let me explain. I began writing in 2018, back when the world's worries were somewhat different. Climate change, greedy bankers, exam results, crap politicians, mental health: these are still huge issues, but even the ancient soothsayers reading pig entrails couldn't have predicted this. This is my new mission: to share the green shoots of hope peeping through the soil of civilisation.

Five hundred years ago no one died of stress: we have invented this concept, and now we let it rule us. Rest has become a dirty word, and our idea of satisfaction is answering the last email. We're sleepwalking through our own lives. Ruby Wax shows us how to wake up from this stupor with a scientific solution to modern problems: mindfulness.

Story
Ruby Wax - comedian, writer and mental health campaigner - shows us how our minds can jeopardize our sanity. With her own periods of depression and now a Masters from Oxford in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy to draw from, she explains how our busy, chattering, self-critical thoughts drive us to anxiety and stress. If we are to break the cycle, we need to understand how our brains work, rewire our thinking and find calm in a frenetic world.

Story
When Michelle Thomas suffered her first major depressive episode six years ago, she read and watched and listened to everything about mental health she could get her hands on in an effort to fix herself. God, it was tedious. And, quite frankly, depressing. Which is the last thing she needed. What she did need was a therapist who would listen and offer a wellness strategy catered to her specific needs. What she got was advice to watch a few YouTube videos and a cheerful reminder that 'it could be worse'.

When Jo Brand hosted Have I Got News For You late last year, her calm explanation of the effects of sexism on women to a bemused all-male cast turned into a viral phenomenon. There has been a whole tradition of books over hundreds of years where a father shares his wisdom with his son - started by Lord Chesterfield in the 18th century - while women have been silent (aka bullied into thinking their advice wasn't worth writing down). This book puts a stop to all that.

Tasty morsel
There is not really a story to judge, but I found her enthusiasm for this subject very contagious, and will explore her other books because of this interview. It would seem she has kept her humour as the basis for her other full length books. I also liked her down to earth approach to mental health issues, which appear to be on the increase, or perhaps we are becoming less repressed about acknowledging the problem widely exists.

Interesting, brief insight into mindfulness
Her passion for the subject of mindfulness comes across in the interview and I do believe she was one of the first ‘celebrities’ to start discussing the subject. I think the world is slowly starting to listen and understand the concept & it’s importance in everyday life. Doesn’t just apply to people suffering from depression, but for everyone.

Love Ruby Wax, she’s so inspirational
Thank you Ruby for your amazing books on mindfulness and a better way of living by understanding our brain and how it works, and addressing mental health.
Keep doing the excellent work by producing more books/audiobooks and doing live shows about your books. Thank you for making mental health issues a far less taboo subject, and making it funny as well as educational.

Mindfulness Guide for the frazzles
I love this book A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled. I carry this book in my bag and lend it to friends. It is also useful to remind yourself of the exercises so when I am feeling a little anxious or I have a full blown attack, I read the exerciises and it help me rethink and challenge my thoughts. Highly recommended. I so hope that the other books do as well as this one. I have purchased Sane New World too and that is so helpful as she was struggling with depression when she wrote it and toured and it inspired me to rethink my working practices and give myself a break from the major depressive episodes I have had and still have today. Having depression is a living nightmare and I can now feel that I am achieving and I have an explanation for my condition, allowing me to explain my illness to others and have the vocabulary. Thank you so much Ruby you are amazing.
