New match, new rules, a whole different ballgame...

After rising to queen, Rogue now must deal with a lot more than she bargained for. Royalty doesn’t just sit around and give orders in Skaki. No, the best of them participate in the much-acclaimed Grand Match that could change their race’s status forever - if they win. But no one except an Ilintian has ever won it. So it’s time for her to team up with an old friend, some new ones, and an unlikely ally to go for the gold. But this is no normal match. There is only one single-player winner. Meanwhile, in the Real, Jewel has challenges to face of her own.

With Ronin gone, more and more of the other set members look to her for guidance. She is Rogue’s sister after all. But it’s not just them. For some reason, the other races keep seeking her out. Who are true allies? Who are enemies? It’s time for her to learn how to play the true game, the game that will determine the future of the whole human race.

This is the 2nd book of the series and I am absolutely hooked. The stakes are just as high, but Rogue is up for the challenge. Will definitely be listening to the 3rd book! Would recommend!

I liked this audio book as it successfully raises the stakes from its predecessor, Pawn. Dual narrators Patricia Santomasso and Sean Patrick Hopkins bring high energy and emotional depth to Rogue and Ronin as they navigate political intrigue and tactical arena combat in the deadly Skaki tournament. While it requires prior context from Book 1 to fully grasp the complex game rules, the strong voice performances and solid character growth make it a compelling, immersive listen for fans of strategic, action-packed fiction. I recommend you listening

Royals captured my imagination from the very beginning! The characters, especially Rogue and Jewel, are relatable and I enjoyed watching how they grew throughout the book. Rogue is given a near-impossible task and we, the reader, watch as she strategizes the challenges of the Grand Match. The author combined world-building with current-day gaming techniques that I found easily understandable and this really spurred my imagination. World-building, issues of trust and betrayal, all blend together to make this a really exciting listen!

Exciting world building!

The narrator delivers an excellent performance, bringing each character to life and adding depth to the story's emotional moments. Overall, it's a satisfying listen for fans of strategic, character-driven fiction and a great continuation of The Strategy Series.
