Story
When President Geoffrey Hilliard’s son Cam, a 16-year-old chess champion, experiences extreme fatigue, moodiness, and an uncharacteristic violent outburst, doctors are quick to dismiss his troubles as teen angst. But Secret Service agent Karen Ray summons her physician ex-husband for a second opinion. Dr. Lee Blackwood’s concerns are dismissed by the president's team - until Cam gets sicker. Lee must make a diagnosis from a puzzling array of symptoms he's never seen before. His only clue is a patient named Susie Banks, a young musical prodigy who seems to be suffering from the same baffling condition as Cam.
Summary
It takes the perfect student to commit the perfect crime.
From USA Today and international best-selling author Jenifer Ruff - a dark thriller.
Medical school at Rothaker University is cutthroat, which is perfect for first-year student Brooke Walton. She thrives on the work and the stress - it’s the people she can do without. Except for Xander Cross, a handsome former college football player who just completed a tour in Afghanistan. Brooke is intrigued by Xander’s troubled past and wants to get to the bottom of his darkest secrets.
But when Brooke’s anatomy partner, Rachael, insists Brooke violated the honor code, all Brooke’s accomplishments and years of hard work are in jeopardy, and she could be expelled from prestigious Rothaker.
Then, Rachael mysteriously disappears.
Desperate for clues, detectives descend on campus to interview everyone: faculty, staff, and students. Only one person is desperate for the truth to stay hidden, and will do whatever it takes to keep it that way.
Warning: This is a dark thriller. Brooke Walton is brilliant, ambitious, and twisted. This is not a cozy mystery, and it is not for everyone.
Rothaker is book two in the Brooke Walton series but can be listened to as a stand-alone.
Critic reviews
"A fascinating peek into the mind and machinations of a sociopath.... Absorbing, at times gory thriller featuring an oddly compelling killer 'heroine.'" (Kirkus)

Keeps you on your toes
I enjoyed book one but loved book two (this one). It had you wondering what was going to happen, as you could picture it turning in several different direction, keeping you guessing and on your toes. As you grow to like the characters and at the same time you think will they make it to the end of the story. The author is very good at dropping clues and building up the suspense making it a great thriller. I can't wait to start the next book.
Brooke has made it to medical school despite what happened at Everett Collage and she has promised this learning experience will be different and a challenge that she is quiet capable of coping with. New friends, new boyfriend, new school, new start what could go wrong. Things start off well and she is second in class but for a perfectionist like Brooke second isn't good enough and when one of her class mates stands in her way of getting what she wants, she has no choice but take charge of the situation and handle it her way.
I really like the narrator and think she does an excellent job with all the different voices.

There are lines you don't cross.
Still obsessively pursuing her ambition to become a surgeon, Brooke enters the first of her four year academic stay at Rothaker Teaching Hospital. Despite working several shifts leading various exercise cllasses, she has serious debts already accrued from her education so far, with more in prospect to see her through this college. She works hard, is meticulous and very good. But she has to be better than good. She has to be the best if she wants to win the surgery scholarship in her fourth year which will pay off all of her last debts. In this she has two main rivals, chief of whom is the annoying woman, Rachel, beautiful, comlassionate, clever, hard working, outspoken and very much liked by all of her fellow students except one: Brooke. Rachel cannot be allowed to threaten Brooke's future...
The reader is taken inside the mind of the devious Brooke as she navigates the murky waters of achieving her goals. Although and is not a particularly pleasant character, author Jenifer Ruff builds a tension which draws the reader's empathy towards Brooke in much the same way that Patricia Highsmith did for Ripley albeit in a lesser way. Narrator Stephanie Dillard enhances this with her admirable performance, her reading faithfully following the emotional nuances of the text as well a giving good, individual voices to all of the protagonists. Her narration is clear and well intoned also.
An interesting book, the second in this series, which does not depend on acquaintance with book one to succeed. My thanks to the rights holder of Rothaker for freely gifting me with a complimentary copy, at my request, via Audiobook Boom. It is a story, easy and fascinating to read, which reflects the outlook of a talented self obsessed sociopath who truly believes that her person right to succeed will benefit others. Quite mesmeric, and recommended

Loved it
My usual genre is fantasy and I prefer a male English voice for my narrator, so you can imagine my joy when I found this thriller narrated by an American female absolutely brilliant!!
A great story that draws you in, with an almost Dexter quality too it, read by Stephanie absolutely brilliantly; perfect character differentiation and pacing throughout.
My only gripe is that, although a perfectly balanced story in its own right, I wish I’d read book 1 first as it would have laid out Brooke’s character for me and it this book frequently makes reference to her past antics!
5/5, well deserved!
This is my honest opinion of a free review copy.

Solid Follow-On To The First Book
This story picks up smoothly from where the first book ended. Some time has passed by and Brooke has moved on to Med school. While this could stand alone, it is best following the first book so that you understand all of the context. You will definitely enjoy this story more listening in order. Unlike the first book this one just ends so you will need to keep on with the story to find out what happens.
The flow of this story is much like the first one with the exception that I didn’t find this story nearly as suspenseful. I didn’t really feel like much happened in this book and seemed more like a setup for the next chapter. The tension and action that was prevalent in the first book seemed a bit lacking here, although I liked this story line a bit more. It seemed a bit more mature than the previous story, but I would still put it into the YA category. That didn’t stop me from enjoying it. I was quite disappointed when it ended and look forward to getting the next story.
The characters again were my favorite part. I wish it wasn’t just Robert making an appearance from the first story, but I liked Xander a lot more than I did Ethan. His struggles coupled with Brooke’s dark passenger really make for an interesting pair. She develops a lot more in this and I didn’t really see the direction that her development was heading. The character relationships and development continues to be something the author excels at in her story telling. I can’t wait to see where their relationship goes and am excited to find out how Robert’s meddling will play into everything.
Stephanie Dillard does another amazing job. I am glad she continues to be the narrator as I really like her character voices. She does a great job adding tension and suspense to the story and really brings it to life.

Wow, this was very good!
First, I have to say I didn't listen to book one so I know I missed a little background on this series. That being said, this was still a very good book and it can be read or listened to without the first book. The characters feel very real and the storyline is excellent. The narration is also wonderful. Overall, this is an excellent book and if it sounds like something you might like, I definitely recommend it! Creepily Captivating
In Everett we see what a psychopath Brooke is and how she will stop at nothing to become a heart surgeon. We get a similar experience as we follow this character to the medical school Rothaker. It is fascinating how calculating she is, I can't help but be entirely captivated. There are some gruesome moments, but mostly it's a captivating listen. Her logic is bizarre but at the same time I see how she decides to do what she does. Also, I can't believe her obsession with Rachel's mole. Very well written story, can't wait for the next one!
The narrator does an excellent job in this performance as she did in the last one. Her acting is a perfect match for Brooke as a character.

Twist OF The Knife and Get Stabbed
This book will play with your head and the thoughts will not be able to escape you. I have not listened to book 1, however, this book was a perfect stand alone
Brooke is a medical student at Rothaker who will stop at nothing to achieve her dream of becoming a heart surgeon. And when I say nothing, I literally mean nothing. This includes, lying, using people, completing homework assignments for classmates (cheating) and even murder. Her mind is not right.

I was all in with the love story presented in this book. A girl with a dark secret and a man with a rough past. It worked well. And then the added element of murder and suspense? Yeah. A good read for sure. Narrator killed it! Pun intended. ;)

Not Dark
Rothaker: A Dark Psychological Suspense Novel.. A good read the book takes it's time getting started But once it does it is a good mystery.
It isn't dark and there isn't much suspense in it. So the title is a bit misleading.
But it is a good read and quite entertaining, the series is going somewhere and I will be reading book 3.

Ending is too open
Brooke is an atypical, somewhat unique, almost likable character. Stephanie Dillard does a very good job of voicing her and all of the characters in this unusual psychological thriller. Although the plot is based on a highly improbable twist, the story is intriguing and suspenseful. Unfortunately, the ending is almost a cliffhanger. It's not at all satisfying.
