Summary

Contains books 1 and 2 of the Rise of the Ancient Gods series.

If it's peace you want don't ever be Jon Ryan. He's lived two billion years in the android host he transferred to when asked to save humankind. Darn thing won't wear out. Since successfully ensuring the survival of the population of doomed Earth, Jon wanted to die. He was switched off with the promise of never being powered up again. Yeah, Jon's never been that kind of lucky. He was forced to fight and win a war with the most powerful enemy he'd ever faced, the Berrillians. Then he longed for rest.

Not in a universe that Jon lives in. A few hundred years after the Adamant War whispers of a new and existential threat began to be heard. People disappeared without a trace. Planets vanished without leaving a pebble behind. And someone was hiding impossible elements at the scenes of these mysteries. Anti-gold sitting right out in the open where it could not possibly be stable.

For better or worse Jon came to learn that the impending invasion of our universe would be by a species calling themselves the Ancient Gods. This malevolent, destructive, and merciless horde was bent on one thing alone. They wanted to have fun destroying our universe. They'd done it to others and couldn't wait to get the party started here. One factor, one force of nature stood between the Ancient Gods's success or their failure. You have to know it was the reluctant Jon Ryan.

But could he pull another miracle out of his hat? Could he triumph over the unbeaten Ancient Gods? If Las Vegas still existed no one there would touch Jon's odds.

Jon assembles his old crew, Toño, Sapale, Al, and his ship's AI Stingray. But they have little time to learn about their enemy and less chance of victory that ever before. After all they were facing god this time out. But, if there was an unwinnable fight anywhere Jon Ryan would rather be at the center of it than waiting to hear how badly it went. Yeah, #fighterpilot. You gotta love those jet jockeys.

What a sad state...

The Forever series had me hooked. Listened to it twice. Galaxy on Fire was ok, but only just. But this is just awful. Wishy washy, non-sensical bordering on slapstick fantasy. It started with promise but honestly I have given up. Perhaps it's time John dies, and we are left with our memories.

Just awful, written for 10 year olds.

I listened to the first twenty minutes and hated every one of them. Nonsensical rubbish, trying desperately hard to be a poor man's Pratchet.
Only the 3rd book I'll be refunding.

Outstanding

Very slight spoiler alert. VERY slight. Absolutely hilarious. Scott Aiello's reading is beyond brilliant with loads of accents. Worth every penny. I have listened to the first two John Ryan books which were good but not to this level, but seem to have have missed some so will correct that immediately. Hopefully the missing one's will be as good as this. An accident put me in a wheelchair so my daughter takes me to the park every day for half an hour where I listen to to my audible books. Once John Ryan gets to the Ancient Gods universe I was constantly laughing out loud, and I do mean constantly. Just so funny. Highly recommend.

Most annoying audiobook ever

The author tries waaaayyyyy too hard to make every sentence in the book funny and fails most of the time. The MC is very annoying; supposedly billions of years old, but acts like a 12-year-old. What's the point of giving the character this backstory when he's got nothing to show for it?

I elected to return the book a few hours in; just couldn't take it anymore.

Craig Robertson Rise of the Ancient Gods

I have read and thoroughly enjoyed every one of the books in this series. All the books so far have kept my interest to the point that I found it hard to put them down until I finished the story. Sadly, this book is the exception. I have labored through this book and on several occasions given serious thought to just chucking it and counting it as a waste of time. It lacks focus and direction, rather it just rambles on in obscure directions that seem to have little or no relevance to the base story line. The snappy repartee and sarcasm are present but frankly overused to the point of annoying in my opinion. I will continue to follow this series if it continues, but I will from this point on, view future additions with a healthy level of skepticism.

IGNORANT NAMES, PITIFUL COMEDIC INTENT

The CIA could use this book for enhanced interrogation!!

Yet its better than M.R. Forbes. Not by much, mind you. Maybe if you are 12 yrs old you might enjoy it. Everyone else be warned. This book is trash.

Just couldn't identify with the charictors!

The narration of this book is good, but I just couldn't identify with these characters. Yes I listened to the bobiverse books, but lost interest after the second one. I bought this book thinking getting away from the original story line might make a difference, but it didn't. I can't put my finger on why I don't feel connected to any of the characters, maybe they are just too far out there away from being human. If you loved the bobiverse you will probably like this one though!

Too much.

I found the story interesting. but the main character it's just too much. we all like a good joke quick remark. but this character did not know how to stop and it took from the story. also who made these characters it was impossible to create a connection without shaking my head or just out laughing at the names being used. nope it was not a good laugh. by far this is has been the worst audible I've listened to.

spoiler alert...you will fall in love with Jack.

Jack is the Uncle everyone wishes they had. I laughed so much until the end. The end left me hanging with no directions on what was next. Slightly disappointing about that but would listen to it again anyway.

Leans way too hard into the confusion speak

I thought John confusing the AI's he ran I to was amusing, but man the last 2 books in this set were hard to get through because of some of the conversations between characters.

weak content

This series is spiraling out of enjoyability. It should have ended with the forever. I will not be buying the next installment.
