Story
At Bagley Hall, a notoriously wild, but increasingly academic, independent, crammed with the children of the famous, trouble is afoot. The ambitious and fatally attractive headmaster, Hengist Brett-Taylor, hatches a plan to share the facilities of his school with Larkminster Comprehensive - known locally, as 'Larks'. His reasons for doing so are purely financial, but he is encouraged by the opportunities the scheme gives him for frequent meetings with Janna Curtis, the dynamic new head of Larks, who has been drafted in to save what is a fast-sinking school from closure.

Story
Harriet Poole was shattered when her brief affair with Simon Villiers, Oxford's leading playboy, ended abruptly, leaving her penniless, alone and pregnant. Still hopelessly in love with Simon, she took baby William and buried herself in deepest Yorkshire as nanny to the children of Cory Erskine, a somewhat eccentric scriptwriter. A whole host of visitors began to arrive to disrupt Harriet's peaceful routine: first Cory's estranged wife, Noel, then his brother, Kit, and finally, of all people, Simon....

A classic collection of journalism from the legendary Jilly Cooper, narrated by Pandora Sykes. Wonderfully warm and astonishingly acerbic, Jilly’s observations from her days as a much-loved newspaper columnist cover everything on sex, socialising and survival - from marriage and friendship; the minutiae of family life and the tedium of going to visit people for the weekend; to the stress of hosting dinner parties and the descent of middle age.

Story
The first rule of Sunday Lunch Club is...don't make any afternoon plans.
Every few Sundays, Anna and her extended family and friends get together for lunch. They talk, they laugh, they bicker, they eat too much. Sometimes the important stuff is left unsaid, other times it's said in the wrong way.
Sitting between her ex-husband and her new lover, Anna is coming to terms with an unexpected pregnancy at the age of 40. Also at the table are her ageing grandmother, her promiscuous sister, her flamboyantly gay brother and a memory too terrible to contemplate.
Until, that is, a letter arrives from the person Anna scarred all those years ago. Can Anna reconcile her painful past with her uncertain future?
Juliet Ashton weaves a story of love, friendship and community that will move you to laughter and to tears. Think Cold Feet meets David Nicholls, with a dash of the joy of Jill Mansell added for good measure.

The first and best!
I've been reading and re-reading this for donkey's years in paper form, so was delighted to find it unabridged in Audible. Its kept me entertained for weeks in the car. The characters in this are brilliant, and they haven't become the caricatures that some of the later books portray. I have real love-hate feelings for most of the characters, and get drawn in every time.
A rattling good read - recommended!!

This series of Jilly Cooper books is my guilty pleasure and I'm delighted to find Riders on audible. I'm loving it! I find the narrator very easy to listen to and her pace of reading is spot on. I'm very pleased this book is unabridged, while long at 30 hours it's great value with an audible membership - I just hope others like Polo, Rivals and Apassionata will follow!

Wonderful!!!!
I read this when I was in high school, about 17 years ago. I loved it then, and it was so wonderful to go back and listen to it again! I love the story, though sometimes a few too many one liners and quips, but otherwise just brilliant! Follows the road to the Olympics for the British show jumping team, with lots of up, downs, backstabbing and randy adventures along the way! Fingers crossed Polo will be made in to an audiobook soon - that was my favourite Jilly Cooper!!!

Bush, rape, punch
Vapid two dimensional characters, most of which I disliked, some were ok at best.
I’m still confused about what compelled me to keep listening.
Initially I thought excessive use of the word bush was the worst thing about this book, then there was the rape scene and the part where the protagonist beats his wife

I'd forgotten how much fun this was
Any additional comments?
I'm not ashamed to say I've always loved Jilly's Rutshire chronicles, Rupert, Taggie and all the rest of the huge cast. Because the saga spread over so many years it's easy to re-read the later ones and overlook the start, and Riders is where it all began.
Gerri Halligan reads this beautifully, and the set pieces like Macaulay going for Rupert in the World Championship and the Olympic Gold in LA really come to life.
I'm sorry that Tory and Jake never figure strongly after this book because they both had the potential to follow through as interesting characters, but as by far the glaringly weakest spot in the whole book is the less than believable 'miracle recovery' for Tory that may be the reason.
So Audible, why are only the first in the series, Riders, and the latest, Jump, recorded? You can't include Wicked, it's abridged. Gerri Halligan gives a great performance and could more than cope with all the others. Where are Rivals, Polo, Score, The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous and all the rest? Let's have Lysander, Rannaldini and all the other characters.... Please?
