Summary

Rebus is off the case - literally. A few days into the murder inquiry of an Edinburgh art dealer, Rebus blows up at a colleague. He is sent to the Scottish Police College for 'retraining' - in other words, he's in the Last Chance Saloon.

Rebus is assigned to an old, unsolved case, but there are those in his team who have their own secrets - and they'll stop at nothing to protect them. Rebus is also asked to act as a go-between for gangster 'Big Ger' Cafferty. And as newly promoted DS Siobhan Clarke works the case of the murdered art dealer, she is brought closer to Cafferty than she could ever have anticipated...

Rebus at his best

If you like interwoven plots and sub plots then clear the decks because this story provides them all. For regular readers many of the previous characters make appearances we learn even more about Rebus his thinking his deductions, at times the plots leads the reader in many different directions. A great story line delivered by James Macpherson keeps the listener guessing right to the end.

Excellent story

This was a great listen. Rebus at his curmudgeonly best. Brilliant narration by James Mc Pherson. I found myself making excuses to listen to this. Even popping headphones on whilst peeling potatoes!
Can’t wait for my next one.

Another Great Rebus Book/story

I love reading Rebus and this book does not disappoint. A bit different as its based in the Police Training College when Rebus is sent back to the "Bad Boys Course" a course designed for the cops who go off the rails, however there is a twist, which make the story even better. Another great collection of characters and James MacPherson does a super job.

A Pact With The Devil

I’ve really enjoyed the latest episode in the Rebus series. Ian Rankin has again given listeners a compelling story with his usual twists and turns.

He is very knowledgeable about police procedural matters. He also shows a great understanding of Edinburgh and other areas in Scotland. Making you think you’re with Rebus as he moves around.

In this latest episode Rebus is back at “school” whilst Siobhan works on a murder case back at base. It’s nice to see Ian Rankin giving more time to other characters.

This doesn’t stop Rebus from working live cases or meeting up with his nemesis Big Ger Cafferty.

I can’t fault the narrator, James MacPherson, he brings the characters to life. He is probably the best narrator I’ve heard yet.

I’m looking forward to listening to the next book in the series.

Satisfying twists and turns

The performance is brilliant, as usual.

The character development is good- consistent and plausible. The storyline has Rebus playing an unexpected part as the inside man for the system but the conspiracy aspect is kept in check and doesn’t spoil the story (a lesson many other writers should note).

The solutions are nuanced and sufficiently satisfying, even though signalled ahead.

Ordinary

Many of Mr. Rankin’s books are gripping and disappointingly, I found that this story wasn’t up to his brilliant best. Nevertheless, his style of narrative is unquestionably good.
