Summary
Are you happy? Is there more to life than this? What if there is another way? What if that way doesn’t involve jacking in your job, leaving your partner, having a midlife crisis, or uprooting your existence? What if that way just involves small actions, taken every day? With no more effort than you now spend tending your social media flock, super-glued to a screen.
Best of all, what if that way costs you little? In fact, what if that way saves you a ton of money and lets you retire a few years earlier?
What if someone said that by following this way, you'll get:
- An idea of what you were put on this earth to do.
- Increased happiness, purpose, and meaning.
- A practical plan to future-proof your career.
- A way to declutter your life, so you’re able to see and think clearly again.
- A fully costed route to financial independence.
- A system to manage your finances.
- An investing plan that will explain how you can get your F. U. Money.
David Sawyer is not a guru. He's just a middle-aged, married-with-two-children, Glasgow public relations guy who woke up one day and decided to change things. Six years later, the result is Reset that will wipe the windscreen of life so you can see clearly again.
It's a page-turner (part story, part practical guide), which draws on the experiences and research of academics, philosophers, Nobel prize-winners, actors, Olympic athletes, self-help authors, investors, and personal finance experts.
If you reset, within a year, you will have transformed your future. It's never too late. You are the master of fate. You are the captain of your soul.
Critic reviews
“Hidden in plain sight within the 300 or so pages of Reset is an elegant synthesis of the latest thinking in financial independence, lifestyle design, and age-old philosophical wisdom - cunningly disguised as a breezy pep talk from your witty mate down the pub. In a world that's forever racing past us on a screen, it's a reminder of the potentially life-changing power of a book.” (Monevator)
"I don't say this lightly: This is one of my top, if not my very top, financial independence books that I've ever read. I absolutely loved it. I feel like it's the book if I had the guts to write my own book, that I would have written this.” (Brad Barrett, co-host, ChooseFI)
“Sawyer’s Reset shows us how to achieve material wealth. It emphasizes discipline, sacrifice, and hard work…” (William D. Danko, co-author, The Millionaire Next Door)

An excellent UK-focused FIRE overview
As an early adopter of mustachism, there wasn't too much new here for me... but if you're over 30, UK-based and have no idea what the hell a mustache has got to do with money, then you *badly* need to listen to this book. David's friendly, genial voice and writing style makes this one of the most painless ways to learn about personal finance I have yet encountered. (The "La's" conceit doesn't quite work in audio, I was wondering if the band had re-formed for a good 20 minutes... but don't worry about that.)

Preferred the Kindle version
Full disclosure I won a copy of the audiobook from the author. That said, I had previously read the Kindle book (and gave it a 5 star review) and it was from connecting with the other from reading that book that I spotted the competition for the audiobook.
So why did I prefer the Kindle version? Firstly, the book itself has a very chatty style and David's delivery is also chatty. The combined resort is a book that's a very easy to listen to but also very easy to let wash over you without concentrating on. I therefore preferred the more involved Kindle version, but that could just be me and audiobooks.
It became more of an issue around the investing section. This has some really useful suggestions on portfolios, but they're very hard to follow compared to seeing them written out in the book.
Mainly though, it's something that was missing - links. The book is full of useful links to other resources mentioned within it, making it really useful for further reading. They're missing in the audiobook, which is a shame. Would perhaps be useful if they were put on a website, although you then wouldn't know what they linked to.
So it's still on my very recommended reading list, but I'll point people towards the Kindle version

Who is this book for?
Disclaimer, I returned this book an hour in.
This book seems to be aimed at people in high ranking jobs. I’m just an ordinary Joe working in health care. It starts off with all these wild promises along the lines of “with great power comes great responsibility” (as in what you will learn here is so amazing) but in reality it’s just waffle.

Great to listen to a FIRE book which is UK based.
The narrator is great and is easy to listen to.
Will definitely drop back into this book again every few months to keep me on the right track.

An in depth insight into the UK FIRE
Unlike other FIRE books I have read, David goes into other details not just in the what to do with your money every month but on how to get more, save more and become a better person in yourself by doing it. It's not a wishy washy 'If you believe it will happen, it will happen' type of book but it does contain ideas for how to make better life decisions.
At times it could have been shorter than it needed to be, but if that's it's only negative then that's still a great book in my eyes.
I have already implemented a lot of the steps advised and I look forward to one day sharing a photo to David with my glass of wine in one hand with me and my wife in our dream location in 16 (No pressure) years time, thank you David.

Excellent money and career book
A fantastic overview and translation of the financial independence movement for the U.K. market. Very well researched, with lots of additional content on career, happiness, and decluttering your life. Well worth a listen, especially if you don’t know what an isa is, and you don’t know how to invest - this will lay out a clear and easy path to build a serious amount of money with minimum effort

All round well researched key information for anyone interested in FIRE
The author has spend years putting all this valuable information together in one place.
It started a bit slow for me but I’ve rated it 5 star as it covered so much in the end it exceeded my expectations
Some very practical advice on how to and best practice ,covering lots of topics some obvious and some not . Interesting was I really enjoyed some of the left field topics covered towards the end 10 things to do and 10 things not to do .
Happy to highly recommend this audiobook

Inspiring and motivating
I was lucky to win this book in a competition. If I hand't won it I would have gladly bought it. It's narrated by the author and listening to Dave is like listening to a good friend. Dave gives a step by step detailed plan on how to get off the hamster wheel and RESET your life. While driving on my daily commutes to my 9-5 job I enjoyed learning about how Dave RESET his own life. He dives deep into the transformative ideas of financial independence, decluttering, budgeting, and the interconnectedness of these with "digital". This book is filled with "take action" lists and inspiring quotes to motivate midlife careerists like me to get off the hamster wheel and get started with a plan to transform your life. It's great for those just starting out on a reset journey because he gets into very specific details, like in the investing chapter for example. But it's also great for those who are in the midst of a reset journey like myself because it's like having a cheerleader confirming you are on the right path and telling you "go on! keep it up! stay focused!" For me it was the perfect book to kick off the new year.

This is a new way of living life
Times change. Many continue to live like 20 or 50 years ago — the standard way. Education, retirement, etc. David offers a new path that fits our time. Humor and details are the basis of this wonderful book.
