She made one mistake, and now she'll never see home again . . .

Mary, a Cornish mariner's daughter, makes the biggest mistake of her short life when she steals a silk hat. Convicted and sentenced to be transported to Australia, she endures horrific conditions aboard ship before landing in a brutal and barbaric country.

It will take all her courage just to survive.

But Mary is also determined to make something of herself in this rugged man's world. And she dreams that one day she will find a way of crossing the cruel seas that lie between her and home . . .

With characters it is impossible not to care about . . . this is storytelling at its very best
An emotional and moving epic you won't forget in a hurry

This has been my favourite lesley pearse book by far, perhaps because it is based on a remarkable true story. The hardship, humiliation, gut wrenching life or death decisions this woman faces kept me hooked. What a different world it was back then.

Fact and fiction blended beautifully. The cruelty extended to those who committed minor crimes just to survive beggars belief. The bravery and courage they showed recorded in this outstanding book stays in the memory long after the book is finished.

Brilliant

Gripping, harrowing account of courage over adversity. Mary went through hell and high water. A rollercoaster that will keep you engrossed. Her plight remained with me long after I finished listening. Brave Lady.

Oh how sad

This book is wonderfully written! It takes you back to a time & a horrific life you re-live with the characters. It’s a book that makes you realize the world we lived it. The classes, the punishments, the horror of the colonies. I could not stop listening to this book!

Great book, gripping story
But the narration let it down for me
Within the first few minutes I wondered if it was an A.I narrator… very robotic

Fabulous book and story, not a good narrator
