Summary

Sometimes it seems we just can't get what we want. Circumstances thwart our best-laid plans. We struggle to live a heartfelt life. Worst of all, says Eldredge, the modern church mistakenly teaches its people to kill desire (calling it sin) and replace it with duty or obligation (calling it sanctification). As a result, at best, Christians tend to live safe, boring lives of resignation. At worst, their desire eventually breaks out in destructive ways such as substance abuse, affairs, and pornography addictions. In The Journey of Desire, Eldredge invites readers to rediscover God-given desire and to search again for the life they once dreamed of.

Nothing Less Than Life-Changing

As a Christian who was brought up with the dismal view of Heaven as sitting around singing "Amazing Grace" ad nauseum for eternity, the book helped reshape my view of living a life for Christ and connected me with my hopes, dreams and desires in an entirely new manner. For everyone who has walked away from the Church and its duties and obligations, this book will help you reshape your theology into one that celebrates the life God sent His Son to die for. You're not the only one who has had questions that nobody else talks about; Elderidge brings them out into the open and offers scriptural solutions.

Great reminder of God's Love & the Battle

Where does Desire rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Almost to the top!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did cry in some areas that really "hit home" with stuff I have dealt with in life.

What no one else is willing to teach

I wasn't prepared for what this would do to my heart. This book got to the bottom of many deep issues in my own heart. I recommend beautiful outlaw in conjunction with this book.

Desire

Never have I seen a script that more perfectly captures the human condition--our yearning for Hope and the absolutely essential nature of the desires placed in our hearts by God. Anyone who has been discouraged or disenchanted with the current dead state of affairs within our church or within ourselves will glean richly from this text.

Great book about heaven and your heart

This was another great Eldredge book. He takes a very intriguing approach to the description of heaven in terms of God making all things new not all new things. Drastically different view than the world view and very refreshing.

Some very interesting Christian concepts

The tone and cadence of the reader sounds like he is about to wrap it up. Very good message to hear and apply.

Solid

I do believe John Eldridge offers us a very unique, original and needed voice for the 21st-century this book and most of his books are about 50% the same as each other; but once you get into the back half of this book it but comes more original and less scripted I believe. So again if you have read one of his books you've read most of them because he hits on a lot of the same things over and over again through movies and books etc. but like I said I think his voice is very needed today but I would say that Wild at Heart or Awakening in God our little bit better all-around books than Desire.

Tugs at your heart

A phenomenal book about believing that our hearts are good and not meant to be manipulated to "be a decent person". To learn about your desires and live from them is a life changing experience. This is a must read for all Christians! and if you're not sure about about the Christian thing, this will still challenge you to learn what you have believed about your desires and why there is a life we can live that is more fulfilling than anything we have known!
