Summary

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom," and "a fountain of life" - the foundation on which all wisdom rests, as well as the source from whence it emanates.

Upon a principle so vastly important, all the subtle malignity of Satan has been directed, if possible to mislead the very elect; while the ungodly and impenitent fall under his devices.

To the mind enlightened by divine truth, the difference between a filial fear of offending God and the dread of punishment is very plain. Still, by the devil's sophistry, some of the most pious Christians have been puzzled and bewildered. Bunyan was not ignorant of Satan's devices, and he has roused the energies of his powerful mind, guided by divine truth, to render this important doctrine so clear and easy to be understood, that the believer may not err.

A thought provoking book

It was difficult to listen at times, you definitely have to be in the right state to listen to this book. In that state, though, this book was very thought provoking and has moved me to think more evangelical in God's name.

Good material read poorly

Anything by John Bunyan is always worth reading or listening to. This material is particularly so - the fear of God is something much needed these days. Bunyan gives a good account of what it is and what it is not.
But the reader is very unhelpful - he's American, and he reads like an American radio broadcaster, full of 'superhero' tones - going up and down, especially in going down at the end of every sentence - listen to the sample and you'll get what I mean!
It's very off-putting - it'll be great if this can be re-recorded in a more suitable voice... Sorry :(

Supposed mix-up

The book was helpful to point the mind towards acknowledging the fear of God. But it is better read than listened to as there are a good number of scriptural references that must be read before continuing.

Most of all, the author lost me when he said the spirit of bondage and the Holy Spirit are one and the same. I just couldn't piece together how [why] he could infer such from the scripture he referred to. I believe he is taking the conviction of the Spirit to mean bondage. I believe the spirit of bondage is as a result of our sinful and fallen nature.... which is what Christ saves us from. I don't believe the Holy Spirit metamorphosizes into the spirit of bondage to convict. I have struggled to continue listening because of this and will not go on from here
