Summary

When Guy Stagg decided to walk from Canterbury to Jerusalem, he spent the next 10 months following medieval pilgrim paths across 5,500 km. He began the journey after suffering several years of mental illness, hoping the ritual would heal him. Travelling alone and without support, he had to rely each night on the charity of strangers.

The Crossway is an account of Stagg's extraordinary journey. It describes the dangers he faced on the road, captures the people he met and the landscapes he experienced, offers a unique insight into contemporary faith and - most movingly - lays bare his struggle to escape the past and walk towards recovery.

A Great Listen

Just brilliant. The story is gripping and the narration is excellent. One of those books you just don't want to end. I rationed myself! I'd recommend this to anyone. Good luck!

a modern day pilgrimage

This is an account of a man who decides to walk to Jerusalem. He is recovering from some mental health issues and hopes his journey will allow him to move forward with his life. He stays at monasteries and churches offering accommodation to pilgrims. It is a slow moving, descriptive story with many characters along the way and a fair amount of personal angst. Very different to other books I have listened to, and although long was worth persevering.

A great listen.

I listened on a drive to Berlin and back few weeks ago. Really enjoyed the narrative. An epic journey of discovery and observation. The characters met, the challenges faced, the geography traversed. It's a book that comes back at you when you least expect. Contrasts and comparisons.
Thank You

Alternative to suicide

Pilgrimage as an alternative to suicide, the first person I've felt to understand my own experience. What an epic journey, Godspeed.

A searching pilgtimage

We follow the author's personal search during his long and courageous pilgrimage throughout Europe and to Jerusalem. During it we learn much of the history of peoples, landscapes and religions, of people's aspirations, beliefs and kindnesses - which carry them through many appalling events carried out under the guise of religion. An encouraging story for our time.

Enthralling take of dedication and endurance

Totally amazing long distance walk. To find enlightenment. I listened to this twice and it was worth it.

Disappointed by the ending

I enjoyed listening to all his experiences but I hoped he would have found peace and become a Christian by the end of his pilgrimage

probably good for historically-minded people

Very descriptive and with historical details but personally found this a bit boring from early on
