Summary

The text of the books contained in The New American Bible is a completely new translation throughout. From the original and the oldest available texts of the sacred books, it aims to convey as directly as possible the thought and individual style of the inspired writers. The better understanding of Hebrew and Greek, the steady development of the science of textual criticism, and the fruit of patient study since the time of St. Jerome, have allowed the translators and editors in their use of all available materials to approach more closely than ever before the sense of what the sacred authors actually wrote.

The New American Bible has accomplished this in response to the need of the church in America today. It is the achievement of some 50 biblical scholars, the greater number of whom, though not all, are Catholics. In particular, the editors-in-chief have devoted 25 years to this work. The collaboration of scholars who are not Catholic fulfills the directive of the Second Vatican Council, not only that "correct translations be made into different languages especially from the original texts of the sacred books", but that, "with the approval of the church authority, these translations be produced in cooperation with separated brothers" so that "all Christians may be able to use them".

Top Quality

Buck Ford's rendition of the NAB is very good. Although American, his accent is mild and all Catholic listeners should appreciate this work. I'd would have given 5 stars but the Inspired By... Bible series is in a different class. However you might prefer this non-dramatized version. Recommended.

Disappointing and monotonous

Would you try another book written by Oasis Audio or narrated by Buck Ford?

I don't think so. He's the reason I found it disappointing and monotonous.

What was most disappointing about Oasis Audio’s story?

monotony

Would you be willing to try another one of Buck Ford’s performances?

Only if I was in training to push the pain barrier in preparation for the marathon of listening to Joseph Goldstein.

Terrible. Thoughtless.

Would you try another book written by Oasis Audio or narrated by Buck Ford?

Most likely never, especially if they fail to provide a meaningful index.

What did you like best about this story?

Best story ever. Inspired by God. No credit then to publisher.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Buck Ford?

I don't know. The narration is mostly very good but his diction is not as sharp and accurate as could be. David Suchet has better diction, in my opinion.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from New American Bible?

None.

Any additional comments?

The area where this recording totally misses the mark is around the failure to adequately index the book. The Chapter index simply shows chapter 1, chapter 2, chapter 3 etc.
I cannot find the chapter and verse in the New Testament which I want to play.
This recording only suits someone who wants to play the recording from beginning to end.
Selecting chapters from the chapter index is pure guesswork. I would never have purchased this if I had know this limitation. This was my first Audible purchase. Disappointing. Beware.
