Summary

Said to be the world's longest poem, Mahabharata was originally composed in 100,000 Sanskrit verses by the ancient Indian sage Vyasa. Revered as a sacred text within Hinduism, it contains the great spiritual teaching Bhagavad-gita. Krishna Dharma has condensed the epic into a fast paced novel that fully retains the majestic mood of the original. A powerful and moving tale, it recounts the history of the five heroic Pandava brothers, sons of the Emperor Pandu. Cheated of their kingdom and sent into exile by their envious cousins, they set off on a fascinating journey during which we meet gods, sages, mystics and mighty warrior kings. Profound spiritual themes underlie the thrilling narrative, making it one of the world's most revered texts. Culminating in an apocalyptic war, Mahabharata is a masterpiece of suspense, intrigue, and illuminating wisdom.

Don't be daunted by the length.

Don't be daunted by the length. It is amazing story, amazingly told. Even for a non religious person like myself, the characters, adventures and epic battle sequences still make it one of the greatest literary experiences you will ever have. It is brilliant on so many levels.

Unlike any other book.

It's hard to say how good a book this is, I come from a background of keeping my religious faith even though it's different from Hinduism I've learnt lessons from this book which I totally missed the importance of till I read it here. Moral injunction seem to be best placed in stories, though there are some miss givings like the practice of Sati and multiple husbands, the way important to duty faith and respect for your elderly hits home. That and 46 hours in to the book and your like its already over!?

Epic!

I can’t quite believe the effect this reading has had on me. I became so immersed that I felt myself there at times! It takes a few hours to get into the story, but I found that even with my shoddy memory, the complicated character names started to stick and relationships became apparent.

excellent overall

enjoyed this version of the Mahabharata. the narrator could be a bit more enthusiastic. it all sounded dead pan.

also the narrator need to review his recording equipment or meal planning, could hear pages turning (not the problem), but could hear his stomach rumbling.

Vedic yoga threads are well discussed as well as metaphysical musings.
