Summary

God Has a Name is a simple yet profound guide to understanding God in a new light - focusing on what God says about himself. This one shift has the potential to radically alter how you relate to God, not as a doctrine, but as a relational being who responds to you in an elastic, back-and-forth way.

In God Has a Name, John Mark Comer takes you line by line through Exodus 34:6-8 - Yahweh's self-revelation on Mount Sinai, one of the most quoted passages in the Bible. Along the way, Comer addresses some of the most profound questions he came across as he studied these noted lines in Exodus, including:

  • Why do we feel this gap between us and God?
  • Could it be that a lot of what we think about God is wrong? Not all wrong, but wrong enough to mess up how we relate to him?
  • What if our "God" is really a projection of our own identity, ideas, and desires?
  • What if the real God is different, but far better than we could ever imagine?

No matter where you are in your spiritual journey, the act of learning who God is just might surprise you - and change everything.

Highly Recommended-

This book is fantastic. It’s packed with nuggets of wisdom that run so deep I’ve been mulling over them and re-reading the book over and over and each time I learn more and grow more in my faith.
Overall an easy listen although parts are heavier theology but brilliantly explained and understandable. I read lots of books and this is the best I’ve read in years. Definitely a must read. And not just for Christians. It’s so thought provoking and enjoyable. Simply loved it! Thanks John Mark. I’m definitely going to look for more of your books.

A stunning insight on who God really is

John Mark unravels some of the age old mysteries of God and questions so many have about the wrestle of good, evil, compassion and wrath; with a wonderful conclusion of God’s overwhelming love and compassion, even through, or because of His justice. This is a must read.

Practical Impact

I read this book about a year ago and didn’t review it at the time, but I’ve thought about aspects of John Mark’s teaching so many times since and found it extremely helpful in reading it and understanding the Bible that I felt I needed to come back here and thank him for an excellent book!

One of the most enjoyable books I have ever read!

I don’t often write reviews unless something blows me out of the water but this book is amazing! One of the best books I have ever read/listened to! The casual style of writing makes it seem much more conversational and easy to follow. The fact that it was read by the author as well really enhances this! The book is about Gods name, his character! Amazing content. Helps you fall in love with God that little bit more, much more actually! Helps take away that stigma of the angry grumpy God of the Old Testament and see him like Jesus, how their characters are the same, not different. Just beautiful! I have no doubt I will return to this book again and again! Really loved it!

Just bought the authors book on the elimination of hurry! Really looking forward to hearing more from him! Thanks so much John Mark Comer and well done! What an absolute blessing this was!

The one and only true God. Yahweh!

Oh for more of this good clear teaching. Brilliantly read by someone who truly knows Yahweh and what it means to be a child of His.
