Summary

Around the beginning of the common era, Indian Buddhists began to collect fables, or jataka tales, illuminating various human virtues and foibles - from kindness, cooperation, loyalty and self-discipline on the one hand to greed, pride, foolishness, and treachery on the other. Instead of populating these stories with people, they cast the animals of their immediate environment in the leading roles - which may have given the tales a universal appeal that helped them travel around the world, surfacing in the Middle East as Aesop's fables and in various other guises throughout East and Southeast Asia, Africa, Russia, and Europe. Author and painter Mark McGinnis has collected over 40 of these hallowed popular tales and retold them in vividly poetic yet accessible language, their original Buddhist messages firmly intact.

Nice for kids

This is a kind of Aesops Fables type vibe, told through animals and using Buddhist teachings for kids.
Many different short stories.
Nice and easy listen. Narrators are good.

Some thoughtful stories

This is an easy listen, if a little bland. Probably best listened to in shortish bursts. The stories are thoughtful though a little predictable maybe. It's mainly aimed at children I suppose. You could maybe use it as something to start a wider discussion about empathy and compassion to your kids maybe, though the narrators voice is perhaps slightly flat after a while. Not entirely unpleasant, this is an ok listen.

The 2 narrator's are very good

I enjoyed this. A lot of fun stories and never gets boring due to the male and female narrator's changing between each story. The stories are a bit basic and certainly made for kids but still a fun listen.
