About this listen

Since time immemorial the warriors of the Paladin Order have harnessed arcane powers to protect their rulers. For Balen, who has given up his chance at love and fought his way to the top of the Paladin Order, there can be no greater honor than to serve his king. But when assassins annihilate the royal family, Balen suddenly finds himself sworn to serve the very man he abandoned.

Now with their nation threatened by enemies both within and outside the kingdom, Balen must fight hidden traitors and unnatural assassins, while also contending with the biting wit and dangerous charm of young King Zavrius. To save themselves and their nation they will have to put aside their past and reforge that trust they lost so long ago.

Enjoyable story that is well written with likeable characters and good world building. The narration is very good as well.

Enjoyable Story

While I will eat up any fantasy BL romance with gusto, after a few reads of true masterpieces in the genre my standards have soared pretty high. The worldbuilding in this hook is fantastic. The Gedrocks, the Paladins the Empire. The first few chapters that focused on worldbuilding were fantastic and got me into the story quick. However this is the first time I struggled to finish a book as the two main leads were insufferable. Balen appeared at first as a man simply doing his duty ending up with his ex as his current boss. Zavreus appeared to be mysterious, playfully but with a darkness hiding under the facade. So much potential. But most of the story was filled to the brim with needless bickering masquerading as conflict and will they won't they, idiotic decisions by both Balen and Zavreus and simply an emotional hot mess. Nearing the end the story finally picked up but even the final battle scene where there was supposed to be character growth felt like it was written by an 11 year old and not fought by adults who had to kill to survive and were facing a true enemy on the battlefield. And this summs up my main qualm with this book: it squandered limitless potential of the fantasy world and just reduced the two male leads to hormonal emotional and idiotic 13 year old middle schoolers whose priorities were "he looked at me funny" and not "we are all going to die as we have magic assassin's after us" Many times I would sigh and beg Balen or Zavreus to grow the f up and just behave. Definitely not going through that again. It was upsetting though as I saw the potential of the story and it went nowhere.
The narrator did a stellar job though!

Great Narration, subpar story

I've been far less bored by far less prettily written stories. It starts somewhat promising, but one can't help but notice a problem in the pacing after a while. It gets repetitive, the tension isn't there, and honestly the little -ahem- crescendo is surprisingly dull. The plot didn't hook me, and I stopped listening at 3 hours remaining. If you want background noise, this book will work for that, because the narrator has a very pleasant voice.

Well narrated snooze

Every other sentence mentions that the MC is a prime palladin. The remaining sentences remind the reader that the other dude is a king.

Very repetitive, could do with editing
