Summary

Features an audiobook exclusive interview: Suruthi and Hannah interview award-winning author Denise Mina on 'the less dead', equality and bigotry in crime, the justice system and the media.

The highly anticipated book from the UK's number one true-crime podcast, Redhanded!

What is it about killers, cults and cannibals that capture our imaginations even as they terrify and disturb us? How do we carefully consume these cases, and what can they teach us about what makes victims and their murderers our collective responsibility?

Redhanded rejects the outdated narrative of killers as monsters and that a victim 'was just in the wrong place at the wrong time'. Instead, it dissects the stories of killers in a way that challenges perceptions and asks the hard questions about society, gender, poverty, culture and even our politics.

With Bala and Maguire's trademark humour, research on real-life cases and unflinching analysis of what makes a criminal, the authors take you through the societal, behavioural and cultural drivers of the most extreme of human behaviour to find out once and for all: what makes a killer tick?

Fair play to them

I do love these two and have listened to every single one of their podcasts which is what I think is the problem! A lot of the main cases used have already been covered so I did find it very repetitive. They are great ladies though so I would say support it and check out the podcast if you haven’t.

Missing the podcasts magic

I'm a big fan of the Red-handed podcast, and even support through Patreon, so I was very excited about this release. Unfortunately, I am quite disappointed with the book.

Rather than using the back and forth dialogue of the podcast, Hannah and Suruthi read sections aloud alternately, which comes over rather stilted and flat.

This method also causes their trademark humour to falter, and make the more detail heavy sections drag somewhat.
And while I appreciate the amount of research involved in the project, much of the content has been covered in the podcast already.

I'm still a Red-handed supporter, but this particular outing wasn't for me.

Very Good!

Great book, very informative, insightful and funny! The only reason I haven't given 5 stars is that a lot of the material has been covered on the podcast. If you have listened to every single podcast episode then there will be some repetition, but if not it is well worth a listen!

Brilliantly interesting

Brilliantly interesting, incredibly researched book delivered in a respectful but humorous manner. So glad Suruthi Bala and Hannah Maguire narrated the book themselves, it adds character to the book keeping it authenticly theirs.
I've binged most of it in one day!

Interesting but not great

I have not listened to the podcast so maybe that would be a better starting point. The subject is interesting but the casual assumptions about the reader is annoying. Perhaps if I had listened to the podcast I would have been more familiar with the style and avoided it. They cover a variety of areas well. It was simply the delivery that I did not enjoy.

Just fine

I like the podcast so thought I'd try the book. It was fine for a time killer but there was nothing new in the book that either a) they haven't covered themselves on their podcast b) hasn't been covered elsewhere many times before. I found it a little choppy and disjointed in places, too.

I'm happy to support the ladies as I do like them both but I do have to be honest and say that the book is just ok and nothing special.

BUY THIS BOOK!!

This is my favourite true crime book to date! (But as a huge fan of the girls and the Redhanded podcast I expected nothing less)!

Every chapter was interesting and insightful, I just wish I could have lasted longer!

fantastic

Hannah and Suruthi are entertaining, engaging and interesting. While the contents were disturbing they presented it in a professional and interesting way that kept me hooked.

Is it weird to say "a good time"?

If you've listened to the show, or are fan of any other true crime podcasts, you've probably heard of most people. Here, you'll get to hear a more in depth reflection on what common patterns can be found, on what things mean when looked at through a societal lens.
If you are a newbie true crime listener? Don't worry. You won't be left stranded. The cases and names referred to will be explained.
