The long-awaited sequel to Jasper Fforde's cult bestseller Shades of Grey, set in world where social hierarchy revolves entirely around visual colour.

Imagine a world where your position in society depended on what bit of the colour spectrum you could see. This is the world inhabited by Eddie Russett (red, middle-level) and Jane Grey (monochromatic, lowest in society). Eddie and Jane must negotiate the delicate Chromatic politics of society to find out what the 'Something that Happened' actually was, how society got to be this way, and crucially, is there Somewhere Else beyond their borders - and if there is, could there be Someone Else, too, someone whose unseen hand has been guiding the fortunes and misfortunes of the nation for the past 500 years?

It's a tale of a young couple's thirst for justice and answers in an implacably rigid society, where the prisoners are also the guards, and cages of convention bind the citizens to only one way of thinking - or suffer the consequences....

Critic reviews

PRAISE FOR RED SIDE STORY:
Cleverly constructed, with engaging characters and lots of good jokes, this sparkling Wizard of Oz-inspired fantasy is . . . one of the quirkiest dystopias ever imagined
The jokes are excellent, the pacing breathless and the last line a classic
Great fun and full of quirky worldbuilding detail
A fun yarn with . . . a generous dose of rollicking adventure
Fforde paints a Terry Pratchett-esque picture laced with laughter
That mischievous little monkey Jasper Fforde was on his best form yet with Red Side Story . . . It was possible to invest a little in the characters, as well as enjoying the incessant puns and Fforde's marvellously eccentric imagination

The longest I have waited for a sequel. Fourteen years is a very long time, but Red Side Story was worth the wait.

FForde is a master and this series of books is truly masterful, unique, and increasingly enjoyable.

Worth the Wait

It has been such a long time since I had read Shades of Grey, that I had to re-read it to remind myself of details. But Red Side Story was definitely worth the wait. It picks up from the end of the previous book, introduces some great new characters, and pulls the whole story together to a ‘proper’ end.
These two book are my favourite by this author, and I only wish those who bought The Game of Thrones to our screens would realise the potential of these.
Probably my favourite audio book.

Awesome hope I don’t have to wait as long for the next one. Highly recommended

After a 13 year wait totally worth it

Overall a good story but I would have liked to spend more time in the second part of the story (after the trial). Hopefully there will be a sequel.

Main narrator is good with good differentiation of the different character voices. The parts read by the author are unfortunately of a poorer recording quality and break the flow of book.

A good sequel but interested to know if it goes further.

We've waited so long but it was well well worth it.

Read book one first, Shades of Grey (dont get muddled with the other one, it's very different).

it was good hearing Jasper reading bits of this audio book, a fun change.

Brilliant
