Summary

In the early 1980s, long before he was President or head of the CIA, even before a submarine named Red October crossed the Atlantic, Jack Ryan was an historian, teacher, and recent ex-Marine temporarily living in England. A series of deadly encounters with an IRA splinter group had brought him to the attention of the CIA's Deputy Director, Vice Admiral James Greer - and when Greer asked him to come aboard Jack was quick to accept. The opportunity was irresistible.

Then Jack forgot about the rest of his work, because on his first day, an extraordinary document crossed his desk. The new Pope had just delivered a private ultimatum to Warsaw: If the government persisted in its repression, he would feel compelled to resign the papacy and return to Poland.

That was going to have consequences.

In Moscow, another man was contemplating those very same consequences. Yuri Andropov, the chairman of the KGB, did not like what this meant for him or for his nation. All it took was one man to cause everything he had worked for to crumble...and all it took was one man to stop him. The Pope was very powerful - but he was also mortal.

And so it begins, an almost unthinkable plot - a plan to bring down not just leaders, but nations. Ryan will find himself in the middle of a chain reaction, a high-stakes game meant to shake the world...and in which a novice CIA analyst might just be out of his depth.

Abridged is GOOD

Usually I listen only to Unabridged stories, because when I enjoy a story, I enjoy all the little details. However this storey has a bad reputation for being boring, so I read the reviews and was please to find full and helpful comments from people who are fans of Tom Clancy ( as I am), so I was pleased to find this abridged version,

As a shorter story I found it really good, and pleased that it introduces characters who appear later in the series. ( sadly I have not limited my listening to chronological order).

Thank you reviewing "Fans"

Good fast plot

My first Jack Ryan story. I enjoyed the fast pace of the plot. English accents are annoying

Don't abridge Clancy!

I haven't listened to the abridged version of the book; I read the unabridged version. So this is an attempt to encourage Audible to make available an unabridged version. It's hard for me to imagine that anyone who enjoys the exquisite detail and elaborate plotting of Clancy's novels will ever be satisfied with an abridged version. If others share this view, plaese let Audible know about it so that we can enjoy listening to Clancy books as they should be.

Don't listen to unabfidged Clancy

I really was disappointed by this audio. I hope it's because it was abridged. It was the poorest Clancy I have 'read'. Stay away.

slow to start but good overall

It took me a while to get into this book. The building of multiple characters in the beginning was a little drawn out, but once the book got going I was eager to hear more. Not an edge of your seat thriller, but definitely worth my time. Three hours of Red Rabbit a day during my commute was far more interesting than the looping news on NPR.

Not worth the time.

This is by far Clancy's worst effort. I've read all of his other books and this one never got off the ground. It might appeal to those interested in all the "details" of CIA actions but is more of a history lesson than a novel.

Eh, fair to decent ... if you're a Tome Clancy Fan

If you are looking for a great Tom Clancy novel, look elsewhere. If you're an avid Clancy fan or have OCD and cannot stand to miss any in a series then this is a decent audiobook but not a must-have by any means.

This Review Needs a Title...So, I

Billed as an early Jack Ryan, Jack has only a little to do in this novel. It was short, abridged, I believe. Many of he characters used in previous novels are introduced. Fun book, on to my next Clancy novel.

Tom's books are almost too real

If you want a dose of reality, of what could really happen then read Tom Clancy. The best horror is the possibly of terror

Typical Tom Clancy - A+++

I enjoyed this book enough to take longer walks during breaks and lunch at work and didn't even mind the traffic to and from work as I listened to the unabridged version. The story was predictable as it evolved, but reading Clancy is more like reading a history book than a novel. Red Rabbitt didn't dissapoint even if it seemed long in places.
