Summary

The violent and inexplicable murder of an old man in his bathtub and the theft of a worthless candlestick send Inspector Porfiry Rostnikov on a hunt into the past.

A ring of car thieves with a taste for expensive vehicles is at large in Moscow's streets. High above the gray city, a sniper is taking aim at police officers, and the obsessed detective Emil Karpo takes the assignment to heart.

Skillfully spun, excellent depiction of an era

Characters true to their nature as they thread from one book to another, building details until one might recognize them on the street. At times it seemed not a mystery, not one of suspense. More a very accurate depiction of how it was at that time to be a Jew in Russia. This a mystery, the emphasis on the process of putting together small particles of information to create a solution ...rather than gaping wounds or blood on the floor.
