About this listen

Meet Tannie Maria: a woman who likes to cook a lot and write a little.

One Sunday morning, as Maria savours the breeze through the kitchen window whilst making apricot jam, she hears the screech and bump that announces the arrival of her good friend and editor, Harriet. What Maria doesn't realise is that Harriet is about to deliver the first ingredient in two new recipes (recipes for love and murder) and a whole basketful of challenges.

Having watched the tv series on U, I was keen to listen to the book and really enjoyed the audio version which was brilliantly narrated.

The book is a cosy(ish) murder mystery, interspersed with recipes and a fantastic setting in the Klein Karoo in South Africa.

Lots of books are set somewhere I haven’t seen/been but this book really does have a wonderful sense of place and a cast of characters that are interesting and unfamiliar.

My only gripe with the audiobook version is that I think it should come with a PDF of the recipes.

Great narration but needs a pdf of recipes

Loved the story, and you truly immersed into a culture and life in the Klein Karoo. The recipes end advice are enticing

I’ve discovered this quite late but hopefully in time for another instalment?! Definitely need more of this well written, gripping, mouth watering, entertainment… rounded off nicely with the perfect narration.

Being South African and living abroad, this book warmed my heart and made me smile. Absolutely love that the recipes are included, and I’ll definitely try some. The story was great! Lots of red herrings that kept me guessing, and I loved the unlikely friendship between Dirk and Anna. If only SA still had a postal service so this could still be possible

Congratulations to Audible for selecting such a great narrator. This book would be hudgely irritating without a genuine South African narrator and it is a joy to hear all the local vernacular and vocabulary correctly pronounced for a change. Moreover Sandra Prinsloo has delighted my wife and myself with a compelling delivery - much more from this narrator please.
The story itself is wonderfully evocative of South Africa. It somehow manages to unite its warmth and friendliness at the same time it exposes its more brutish side. Good story and believable characters that readers can care about.
Great job.

Wonderfully evocative and enjoyable
