It’s ok, it’s a reworking of several good sci-fi idea’s. Presented as a multi book reading it works but I found you need to suspend all notions of belief in order to accept some of the descriptions. I found a few frustrating chapters where the reliance on certain things (such as atmosphere) was drummed home only to be totally forgotten in order to make a paragraph work later. At times there were so many characters and so many cut aways (telling the story from different characters at different times) to keep track of who was who and where they were.
