Earth’s future is bleak in the gripping sci-fi fantasy audiobook Ready Player One, written by the brilliant Ernest Cline and narrated by American actor Wil Wheaton. Set in the near future, most of the human race have locked themselves into a virtual reality to escape the planet that the past generations had destroyed. Within this virtual existence lies the answer to infinite riches and Wade Watts spends every second on the treasure hunt. It is a frenzied race with countless players, all infected with desperation. The danger is intense and will affect them all.

Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The book behind the major motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg.

Now a major motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg.

A world at stake. A quest for the ultimate prize. Are you ready?

It's the year 2044 and the real world has become an ugly place. We're out of oil. We've wrecked the climate. Famine, poverty and disease are widespread.

Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes this depressing reality by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia where you can be anything you want to be, where you can live and play and fall in love on any of 10,000 planets. And like most of humanity, Wade is obsessed by the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this alternate reality: OASIS founder James Halliday, who dies with no heir, has promised that control of the OASIS - and his massive fortune - will go to the person who can solve the riddles he has left scattered throughout his creation.

For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that the riddles are based in the culture of the late 20th century. And then Wade stumbles onto the key to the first puzzle.

Suddenly, he finds himself pitted against thousands of competitors in a desperate race to claim the ultimate prize, a chase that soon takes on terrifying real-world dimensions - and that will leave both Wade and his world profoundly changed.

What about Wil Wheaton’s performance did you like?

good reader, there was no monotone reading

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

theres a film coming out and if it was that i would say "steven spielberg, it has to be good"

Any additional comments?

best audiobook I've had but I'm a Geek lol

From start to finish loved the concept and story I was emerged in what I'd think the future of technology and gaming would be like. me and my friends have discussed this at some length in the past and it's nice to see we're not alone in what we think will happen in the future and it's a little terrifying and exciting plus I thought the online schooling to be a grate concept. The story brought back memories from my childhood and recent years being a Gamer,Filmbuff, basically I bit of a Geek it emerged me even more into the story. I was looking forward to listening to the next chapters to see what els my memories it would bring forward..

Bring on Ready Player Two!!!!

Also thumbs up to Wil Wheaton at first I didn't think I'd be able stand listening to him for a full audiobook. From my memories of him in Star Trek the new generation. But obviously seeing his balls have dropped and that he's not annoying kid in real life it was enjoyable to listen to. Someone who's was sincere and passionate definitely a fellow Geek Good Job👍👍👍

Fabulous - get it now

Having been a teen in 80's just loved it. Great story, loved the mention of Cory Doctorow and Wil Wheaton and brilliant narration by Wil Wheaton. Listened for about 7 hours straight today just to get to the end.

Brilliant story

The film isn't half as good as the book. Immersive and wonderfully performed. Bring on the sequel!

Entertaining sci-fi with a dollop of nostalgia

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book, but it didn't take me long to get hooked. If you're a 40- to 50-something with a bit of an inner geek, this book will have you smiling as you reminisce of days playing old computer games and arcades. I am mild geek and was blown away by a lot of the references, to the point where I also watched Blade Runner again. Who knows, maybe War Games and The Holy Grail will be next on my watch list!

It takes me a while to get used to American narrators, but having watched a lot of Star Trek Next Generation, Wil Wheaton was a familiar voice and I settled into the listen very quickly.

The plot was great and plausible, which provoked a bit of humanity questioning along the way without overwhelming the reader. It was well paced and all-in-all a thoroughly entertaining read. Hopefully I won't be disappointed by Spielberg' s movie when I get round to watching it.

Better than the movie (which I adored)

Having watched the movie first, I had to see if the book was any good... it is simply a masterpiece. I binged the lot in 3 days... couldn’t stop. The skeleton of the plot is the same, but just about everything else is different (in a good way, it only adds to your movie memories and won’t subtract from it in any way).

Absolutely gutted it’s over. Wil Wheaton is outstanding... his performance is the icing on an already delicious cake.
