About this listen

The untold story behind the hit true crime podcast The Clearing, this unforgettable memoir traces one daughter’s moving quest to understand her larger-than-life childhood as she searches for the truth about her father, the serial killer Edward Wayne Edwards.

One evening in 2009, April Balascio was searching online, as she had been every night, for unsolved murders in the towns her family had lived growing up, when she stumbled across the latest investigations into the “Sweetheart Murders” cold case. All at once, the buried memories of her father’s dark history were awakened, and she knew she had to take action. She picked up the phone to call a detective and the rest is infamous true crime history.

In her unflinching memoir, Balascio bravely reveals an astonishing tale of a lifetime of manipulation, unexplained upheavals, and silent fear. Some part of her had always known what her father was capable of, but the full truth of how she came to these revelations is as riveting as it is quietly terrifying. Through searing storytelling, dedicated research, and intimate insight, Raised by a Serial Killer is a gripping, courageous memoir unlike any other.

What a brave lady to do what she did. Really well delivered and narrated. Would recommend

Brilliant book

I found this gripping and also really moving. The descriptions of the author’s life growing up (as well as of the other crimes committed by her sadistic father) were at times extremely painful to listen to, but she is such a courageous and inspirational individual and there are also messages of hope throughout. I thought it was also really well read by the author.

Such a moving and inspirational story

An extraordinary story. I enjoyed her reading, simple, unprofessional, unstated emotion. She was incredibly courageous. Her strength of mind, even as a teenager when she refuses to answer Mark’s letters, quite possibly saving his life, is incredible. Who knows what her father would have been like if he’d not experienced the dreadful trauma of his childhood. At least he gave an example of what not to be for his children.

Excellent reading

The author reads the book herself and this gives a bonus of authenticity. The story covers her childhood, after she left home and her increasing suspicions as the years went by. What is particularly disturbing is the father projected himself as a reformed character but never changed and hid his despicable crimes. Highly recommended!

Dark but Uplifting in parts

This was fascinating, and it's an important documentation written from the unique perspective of a serial killers daughter - who is very brave. Unfortunately I wasn't a fan of the narration- for that reason it might be better to physically read the book.

Fascinating story.
