great book. should've left ragnar out of the title

the book is bursting with information and facts about everything to do with vikings but there was only a small section about ragnar however it was a really good read teaching of the norse mythology and cosmology and famous vikings such as ragnar, floki, roll and ALL of ragnars sons.

Poor narration

Story was fine but the narrator had all the soul, rhythm and pronunciation of an early sat nav. Painful.

Poor narrator

The narrator makes this nearly impossible to listen to. Bad pronunciation and robotic voice, which is a shame as the book has good information. Hardly anything about ragnar lothbrok though.

Awesome book, horrible name/place pronunciation.

I loved the book and found it very educational. However, I found the blatantly incorrect pronunciation even of modern day places (which we KNOW how they are pronounced), of names and of latin quotes quite annoying, and often times I had no clue what the book was talking about. Overall, very nice book!

Very informative

Very informative book. There were many stories passed down from the Vikings (even though they never had a written language) and the many nations they invaded. Excellent listen.

Worth the purchase

It is interesting how warlike the culture is with scant resources in the Dark Ages with no written records, yet they were well ahead of their times, treating women more equally in some ways than other countries and cultures. It's worth the purchase!

Narrator makes this almost impossible to listen to

Narrator is an American with the most boring voice i could possibly imagine. Narrator seems either unable or unwilling to be able to pronounce anything correctly, with the section on the Vikings in Ireland in particular having almost every single person or places name being incorrectly pronounced, as well as containing a large number of historical inaccuracies and misunderstandings. Overall quality of the book majorly brought down by the very poor narration.

Huge Disappointment

This is a very disappointing book on what should be an entertaining retelling of the history of the Northmen and their impact on the Western world. I felt that the author repeatedly jumped back and forth in time which, for me, had a distracting affect on the story. It wavered in the timeline and I found this very annoying. There was also a tendency to repeat information as if to pad out the text. The performance was dire. Not only has the narrator a sonorous voice that at times sounded much like a computer but I was angered at the pronunciation of names and places. Surely he could have put some effort in to researching the correct way to say "Louis" or "Ipswich"? The tales of the Vikings is a terrific story- it is just so badly told in this audiobook.

Wow!

The Vikings are known to most of us through comic book images and fragments of stories. The book tells the influence and impact of the sea wolves to history. I truly enjoyed learning what made these people different and special.

Happy with this purchase!

I'm very happy with my purchase of this book overall. The first thing I will say, it is not a book for experts on mythology. It is more a book for beginners or for those who like to have extra source material for research but it is not 100% in-depth on the subject. I bought this so I could introduce my grandkids to mythology and teach them about all the different types of mythological stories and gods, especially the story of Ragnar Lothbrok and Norsemen. This book is perfect for anyone interested in myths.

Beautiful

It's a beautiful addition to my mythology collection. I do wish, however, that there was more about Rollo in here. Only a few blips about how great he was. I'd like to know more about the "why" behind it all. Everyone has a story, and I was hoping to get a little bit more about him. I'm happy I purchased this though.

Nice

This is a well-conceived and thoroughly enjoyable chronicle of the Viking Age and its impact on the subsequent events that make up human history. Rather than just narrating a timeline of events, the author uses the unique approach of relating the stories of specific individuals

Fascinating!

I'm a fan of the History channel's series "The Vikings". I wanted to know more about the sagas about Ragnar Lodbrok and his sons. A fascinating listen. If you're a fan of the series you'll be pleased to have this book.

Interesting and excting!

For the book itself I found the stories well narrated and interestingly written. It is difficult to write HISTORY when you only have a few written references available. However, the author did his best. Having been a fan of the Vikings tv series, it was fun to get a better handle on the chronology, the sagas and the lineage.

detailed book

It has a good overview of the history of the Vikings and events are told in a very good manner which keeps it more interesting. So if you are looking for a very detailed book on the history, you probably want to look elsewhere, but for a QUICK overview of the lives and history of the vikings especially Ragnar, this hits the mark.

I think the stories I've heard over the years has peeked my interest and this book has helped to make sense of this. A Well smooth, well-written slice of time.
