Summary

The fourth instalment in a gripping and atmospheric crime series set on a small island where there is no escape....

An island on lockdown. A killer on the loose....

As the scorching summer sun covers the small Scilly island of St Mary’s, DI Ben Kitto and his team are training for the annual Swimathon. But their morning session comes to a climactic end when they discover a body hanging from Pulpit Rock. The victim has been dressed up in a bridal gown, and Ben quickly realises that a dark and sinister killer is at large on the island.

To prevent the killer from escaping, Ben has no choice but to lock down St Mary’s, yet in doing so he is unwillingly trapping the killer’s next victim. When another woman is attacked, Ben gathers the island’s at-risk residents inside the local hotel for safety, but the killer is already watching and remains one step ahead.

Everyone is a suspect. No one is safe.

Excellent story.

I enjoyed this book immensely. A very intriguing story which kept me unable to stop listening until I found out who was the murderer. Would highly recommend.

Not quite…

I thought the characters in this one were less well developed - but the same great atmospheric ambience.

They keep getting better and better . Some have said they are much the same but I disagree ..each has a special separate sense of direction. This one was the best so far . Keep them coming kate please !

Preferred reading this series

Hearing rather than reading about St Marys and the islanders left me not liking any of them. How odd.I especially took against Ben Kitty when he referred more than once to his beautiful dog as “the creature” and not in a fun way. He was the most dislikeable, dull, predictable, unexciting and what the gorgeous Nina sees in him…
Story was quite good and the series varies, so nothing special but I got it free so that’s life!

Really enjoyed this book. Will listen to the final in the series. I will also have a look at the other books written by the author.

A good story

Listening to and loosing myself in a good book never fails to satisfy and good overcoming evil is what all the best stories are about

Not a patch on the first three Kitto novels

Stephen Perring was superb as the narrator, but this fourth book in the series was nowhere near as good as the first three. The proposition was a good one but the stupidity of action and lack of proper thought displayed by Ben Kitto in this book was disappointing. With the vast array of those with a supposed motive there was a lot of jumping to - incorrect - conclusions without any evidence, which was obvious and irritating. I got the feeling that he was an amateur sleuth rather than a professional policeman - a poor relation to his character in previous books. It made the book feel lightweight rather than a good detective novel. Hopefully any further books in the series will return Ben to his previous stature.

Loved it as usual!

Love the backdrop of the Islands in the sea. The community island life. Shadow! The right balance of familiarity, if you've read the other books in the series, and keeping us guessing. Love the way it is read. I hope so much there will be another book in the series!

Hit and miss policework

I don't understand the theory of 'let's arrest this person even though we have no evidence against him, then we can browbeat him and find out if he is guilty!'
It was all about guess work, nothing else, until the guilty party was actually caught in the act!

No more for me by this author!

I've just reread this as I was debating whether or not to buy the latest release, I forgot I'd written this review and came to write one, my comments were going to be exactly what this review says so I am really convinced that I am right! It's all about guesswork, I think that 4 or 5 people were arrested before the correct protagonist came to light!

Definitely won't be buying the latest release!
