Story
The enthusiasm for and expectation of happiness are so widespread today that fundamental questions about it are often overlooked. For starters, the most basic question of all: where does happiness come from? Is it your brain - a mere concoction of chemicals or network of neurons? Is it in fact your gut? (Spoiler alert: yes. Sort of) Or is it external? Is it love or sex or money or success? And what are these doing to our brains anyway? In The Happy Brain, Neuroscientist Dean Burnett delves into our most private selves to investigate what causes happiness.

Why is it easier to ruminate over hurt feelings than it is to bask in the warmth of being appreciated? Because your brain evolved to learn quickly from bad experiences but slowly from the good ones. You can change this. Hardwiring Happiness lays out a simple method that uses the hidden power of everyday experiences to build new neural structures full of happiness, love, confidence, and peace. Dr. Hanson’s four steps build strengths into your brain, balancing its ancient negativity bias, making contentment and a powerful sense of resilience the new normal.

A revelatory and entertaining book about the pitfalls of how we measure our economy and how to correct them, by an award-winning editor of The Financial Times. According to GDP, the economy is in a golden era: economic growth has risen steadily over the past 70 years and shows no sign of stopping. But if this is the case, why are we living in such fractured times, with global populism on the rise and wealth inequality as stark as ever?

In this acclaimed investigation, Owen Jones explores how the working class has gone from 'salt of the earth' to 'scum of the earth.' Exposing the ignorance and prejudice at the heart of the chav caricature, he portrays a far more complex reality. The chav stereotype, he argues, is used by governments as a convenient fig leaf to avoid genuine engagement with social and economic problems and to justify widening inequality.

Story
The Blind Watchmaker, knowledgably narrated by author Richard Dawkins, is as prescient and timely a book as ever. The watchmaker belongs to the 18th-century theologian William Paley, who argued that just as a watch is too complicated and functional to have sprung into existence by accident, so too must all living things, with their far greater complexity, be purposefully designed. Charles Darwin's brilliant discovery challenged the creationist arguments; but only Richard Dawkins could have written this elegant riposte.

Intelligent design my rear!

Summary
Countless charities and awareness campaigns work tirelessly to show people that mental health problems are common and serious issues. But when it comes to mental health matters, one question that's rarely asked is...why?
Why are conditions like depression and anxiety so common?
Why is our mental health so vulnerable to the stresses and events of modern life?
Why do so many mental health problems have pronounced physical symptoms?
Why, if mental health problems are so commonplace, does anyone need to be made 'aware' of them in the first place?
And why is there still so much confusion and stigma about mental health matters?
Drawing from nearly 20 years working in the areas of neuroscience, psychology and psychiatry, international best-selling author Dr Dean Burnett (The Idiot Brain, The Happy Brain) hopes to answer these questions and more in his new audiobook Psycho-Logical (exclusive to Audible). Combining in-depth research with genuine testimonials from those who deal with their own issues on a daily basis, Psycho-Logical aims to uncover just what we think is going on with our brains when serious mental health problems occur, how and why the available therapies work (when they do), and just how flexible and uncertain much of the scientific understanding of mental health is.
Expertly narrated and written in an engaging and straightforward style, Psycho-Logical is must for anyone who's ever dealt with mental health issues of their own, knows someone who has or is interested in the ever-more-important subject matter.

A must read, for everyone!
This is another fantastic book by Dean Burnett, and probably his best one to date. His first two books have set the bar extremely high. Dean Burnett's style of dry humour and absolutely spot on analogies helps to put complex issues across in a way that a lay person can understand. These analogies help to convey to the reader just how difficult it is to understand the complexity of mental health issues. This is no doubt helped by the fact that Dean Burnett is also a stand up comedian. He starts the book in a very candid way and explains exactly what his personal expertise is and how he is approaching the subject. Dean Burnett has this incredible ability to distil complex issues into some sort of semblance that makes sense. If this was available in paper format I would be sending a copy to many of my family and friends for Christmas. However, it is unlikely to make the same impact in paper format. The superb narration by Matt Addis, who is one of my favourite narrators, combined with various known personalities narrating their own mental health challenges makes this audio book a very compelling listen. If you're not convinced within the first 30 minutes of listening, that this is one of the most relevant non-fiction audio books tackling the current issues of the day, I would be extremely surprised!!

Too much political nonsense
This book has a lot of problems. The author unironically uses the term 'toxic masculinnity' and in the first chapter there were attacks on Donald Trump. I purchased this to learn more about the working of the brain, not to hear the author's personal opinions.
