Charleston is desperate for a miracle.

At St. Jude’s soup kitchen, Clara has learned to recognize the difference between recovery and pretending. She knows the look of a person still fighting to stay alive. She knows the tremor, the shame, the exhaustion, and the fragile spark that says someone is still in there.

Then Toby comes back.

Clean. Calm. Polite. Sober.

And completely wrong.

He has been to Quiet Harbor, a celebrated new recovery program led by the brilliant and compassionate Dr. Malcolm Sokolov. The city calls it a breakthrough. Judges are recommending it. Families are praising it. Overdose numbers are falling. People who once lived in panic, grief, addiction, and rage are returning peaceful, functional, and free from pain.

But Clara sees what others refuse to see.

The people coming back are not healed.

They are hollow.

When Aiden enters her life, wearing another man’s broken body and carrying impossible memories of a force that once tried to consume him, Clara realizes Quiet Harbor is not simply treating addiction. It is harvesting something far deeper than pain. Grief, shame, longing, fear, love, resistance—the jagged pieces that make a person human—are being stripped away in the name of mercy.

Together, Clara and Aiden must uncover the truth before Charleston becomes the first city to mistake emotional death for healing.

Because the most dangerous promise is not that you will never suffer again.

It is that you will never feel anything at all.

Proof of Life is a dark, emotionally charged supernatural thriller about addiction, grief, false salvation, and the terrifying cost of a cure that works too well.

Quiet Harbor seems like the answer Charleston has been waiting for, but Clara knows something isn’t right. I enjoyed following her as she uncovered what was really happening to the people who returned from treatment. The supernatural elements were unsettling, and the story raised some powerful questions about pain, healing and what it truly means to be human.

The idea behind Quiet Harbor was genuinely disturbing—people returning free from addiction and pain but also stripped of the emotions that made them who they were. Clara was a strong, compassionate character, and I enjoyed watching her trust her instincts when everyone else saw the program as a miracle. This was an original supernatural thriller that kept me curious and uneasy throughout.

The idea behind Quiet Harbor really got under my skin. At first, these people seem cured, but Clara can tell that something important is missing. I liked how the story explored addiction and grief through a supernatural thriller without losing sight of the people involved. It made me question how much of ourselves we would be willing to lose just to stop hurting.

This story brings grief/.addiction and many other real life matters into a sci-fi take on what it would be like to lose the emotional anchor. It got me thinking about what I feel in my life and made me re-think what it would coast to bury those emotions, as frustrating and sad as they are sometimes. A very heart wrenching and heart warming listen!

I realized I was hooked when Clara started watching the returned patients instead of accepting the city’s happy reports. Her observations felt personal and believable, especially because she understands how recovery can look when it is barely holding together. From there, the story kept opening new questions about Toby, Quiet Harbor, and Aiden without dumping answers all at once. I also liked the uneasy Charleston setting, where a soup kitchen and a celebrated clinic feel equally important to the mystery.

The narration worked well for the slow dread. It gave the emotional scenes room to land, then picked up speed when Clara and Aiden got closer to the truth. I wanted a little more time with some of the side characters, but the central story held my attention right through the ending.
