About this listen

Organizing yourself is harder than it looks - Lewis may be a highly proficient PA for two very successful cosplayers, but that means nothing when you’re living at your parent’s house after yet another failed relationship and trying to find some stable ground.

Jason Lu, star of Celestials, is stuck between a rock and a hard place. When the show is cancelled and his character pigeonholed into a homophobic ending, Jason must choose whether to fall in line or break ranks. But one misstep will mean bumping heads with some powerful people.

Teaming up with the very cute guy he met at Comic Con seems like a natural first step, and now Lewis and Jason must choose between heartbreak and justice. As they forge ahead, they realize there are no bonuses for navigating life’s challenges; instead, they’ll just have to fight for what they believe in.

But sometimes overcoming the biggest hurdles yields the best results.

Proficiency Bonus is a 79,000-word contemporary MM romance featuring plushies, Pokémon, and a fight for the perfect ending. It is book three in the Roll for Love series and can be listened to as a stand-alone.

If you've ever been disappointed and angered by the way a favorite TV show or movie ended, you'll sympathize with Jason when his show is cancelled and his character's ending leaves him hurt and looking for some closure. He teams up with Lewis to achieve a bit of revenge and we get to see some interesting glimpses of what some PAs do in their job. What starts as a flirty attraction and some teamwork, morphs into something much more meaningful in this wonderful addition to the series. Joel Leslie is a long-time favorite and his expertise at giving multiple characters distinct voices while capturing all the emotion is on full display here.

I loved Proficiency Bonus the first time I read it, I fell in love with Jason and Lewis, both as individuals and as a couple, and the journey they go on both in their personal and professional lives, and listening to them really come to life through Joel Leslie's fantastic narration really solidified how much I adored this story. Charlie has such an amazing way for world building, you really feel a part of the book, and the emotions both characters experience. In PB, Jason faces a difficult decision, possibly the biggest decision of his professional character, and we have all been there when one of our favourite shows gives us an ending that breaks our hearts and essentially loses the meaning behind the entire show. PB is very endearing, sweet, low angst and a fantastic representation for ADHD.

I thought Jay was my favourite, then Edward, but it's totally Lewis. I just loved everything about him, from his tangents to his crazy family.
This is low angst with the only drama being outside of the relationship with the Celestials ending and I loved how that story came full circle with the Celestials being important in Jay and Leo's story.
Jason and Lewis' meet cute was adorable and I loved how naturally things evolved from being friends to being more.
The steamy parts worked really well in the narration.
Joel Leslie is a talented narrator, his voices are distinctive and it was easy to discern who was talking making it easy to follow along and sink into the story

Story: This book was an awesome feel good story with totally lovable characters. I loved the whole idea of the fandom / acting background and how it was woven into Lewis and Jason's story. The uniqueness of the background was a huge bonus for me - never encountered such a backdrop in a book before.
The author has managed to touch on several really important subjects, like ADHD or queer themes in mass media. It's not a manifest, but a contemporary story that is skillfully written into a very contemporary setting. Well done!
Narration: Very good performance and very fit for the story!
