Summary

Appalled by the news her father gives her, Professor Cassell's daughter, who had lived very happily with her widowed father in war-torn 1950's London, knows she has to get as far away from him and London as she possibly can.

She applies and is accepted for a job at a boarding school in Cornwall. But all is not what it seems in this remote institution. The building is rambling and perilous, the staff sinister. She knows she can't go back to London. She must stay here despite her increasing sense of foreboding.

I was disappointed, such a fan of Margaret Bacon

I was disappointed, it just didn't seem to be the same author as Kingdom of the Rose, which is one of my favourite books. Perhaps it would have been better with a different narrator.
